What babies eat after birth likely determines lifetime risk of obesity, rat study suggests
Friday, August 31, 2012Rats born to mothers fed high-fat diets but who get normal levels of fat in their diets right after birth avoid obesity and its related disorders as adults, according to new Johns Hopkins research.
Meanwhile, rat babies exposed to a normal-fat diet in the womb but nursed by rat mothers on high-fat diets become obese by the time they are weaned.
The experiments suggest that what mammalian babies ? including humans ? get to eat as newborns and young children may be more important to their metabolic future than exposure to unhealthy nutrition in the womb, the Hopkins scientists say.
"Our research confirms that exposure to a high-fat diet right after birth has significant consequences for obesity," says Kellie L.K. Tamashiro, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and leader of the study published online in the journal Diabetes. "But it also suggests that by putting children on a healthy diet in infancy and early childhood, we can intervene and potentially prevent a future of obesity, diabetes and heart disease."
Obesity has become a worldwide public health problem that often leads to many other disorders, such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and arthritis. A significant concern in Western society is the consumption of modern diets high in fat: Rates of obesity are skyrocketing, costing the health care system billions and reducing longevity.
In the Johns Hopkins experiments, newborn baby rats exposed to a high-fat diet through the breast milk of rat mothers fed high amounts of fat were more likely to gain excessive weight, have impaired tolerance to glucose (a sign of prediabetes) and become insensitive to the hormone leptin, which regulates appetite and body weight in humans and rodents and can be disrupted in obese mammals. Leptin, secreted by fat cells, signals how much fat is around and controls food intake; obese people often are insensitive to the signals, for reasons so far unclear.
To compare the impact on offspring obesity of prenatal versus postnatal exposure to a maternal high-fat diet, Tamashiro and her team began by feeding half of the pregnant rats a high-fat diet and half a normal diet. After birth, half of the offspring of the high-fat moms were given to the normal-diet moms to nurse and vice versa. Those exposed to a high-fat diet both before and after birth (through breast milk) gained more weight and were obese by the time they were weaned, as were those who were only nursed by rats on a high-fat diet. Those born to mothers on a high-fat diet but nursed by rats on a normal diet did not suffer the same fate.
Tamashiro and her colleagues currently are trying to determine whether exercise in early rat development, the equivalent of elementary school age in humans, can reverse the effects of exposure to a high-fat diet.
"These animals ? like children ? are still developing and responding to their environment, and, as much as possible, we want to make sure they develop properly so bad health consequences don't occur," she says.
While the findings are important steps in understanding how prenatal and postnatal environments affect development, Tamashiro cautions that data from rats don't directly translate into human application.
Still, Tamashiro says, obstetricians may be on the right track as they rethink guidelines for pregnant women. Many suggest that obese women limit weight gain during pregnancy by reducing fat and calories. Obese mothers who switch to healthier diets during pregnancy and then maintain them while nursing may be able to help their children avoid the road to obesity, Tamashiro says.
"Obesity rates have increased threefold over the last 20 years," she says. "We know it's not because of genetics because our genes don't change that quickly. So we are focusing on the developmental environment. Obese children are developing metabolic disorders earlier, affecting their quality of life and health over the long term. Prevention is probably the best strategy we have."

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? NASA's Dawn spacecraft is on track to become the first probe to orbit and study two distant solar system destinations, to help scientists answer questions about the formation of our solar system. The spacecraft is scheduled to leave the giant asteroid Vesta on Sept. 4 PDT (Sept. 5 EDT) to start its two-and-a-half-year journey to the dwarf planet Ceres.
Dawn began its 3-billion-mile (5-billion kilometer) odyssey to explore the two most massive objects in the main asteroid belt in 2007. Dawn arrived at Vesta in July 2011 and will reach Ceres in early 2015. Dawn's targets represent two icons of the asteroid belt that have been witness to much of our solar system's history.
To make its escape from Vesta, the spacecraft will spiral away as gently as it arrived, using a special, hyper-efficient system called ion propulsion. Dawn's ion propulsion system uses electricity to ionize xenon to generate thrust. The 12-inch-wide ion thrusters provide less power than conventional engines, but can maintain thrust for months at a time.
"Thrust is engaged, and we are now climbing away from Vesta atop a blue-green pillar of xenon ions," said Marc Rayman, Dawn's chief engineer and mission director, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "We are feeling somewhat wistful about concluding a fantastically productive and exciting exploration of Vesta, but now have our sights set on dwarf planet Ceres.
Dawn's orbit provided close-up views of Vesta, revealing unprecedented detail about the giant asteroid. The mission revealed that Vesta completely melted in the past, forming a layered body with an iron core. The spacecraft also revealed the scarring from titanic collisions Vesta suffered in its southern hemisphere, surviving not one but two colossal impacts in the last two billion years. Without Dawn, scientists would not have known about the dramatic troughs sculpted around Vesta, which are ripples from the two south polar impacts.
"We went to Vesta to fill in the blanks of our knowledge about the early history of our solar system," said Christopher Russell, Dawn's principal investigator, based at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). "Dawn has filled in those pages, and more, revealing to us how special Vesta is as a survivor from the earliest days of the solar system. We can now say with certainty that Vesta resembles a small planet more closely than a typical asteroid."
The mission to Vesta and Ceres is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., for the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, which is managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.
UCLA is responsible for the overall Dawn mission science. Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., designed and built the spacecraft. The German Aerospace Center, the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, the Italian Space Agency and the Italian National Astrophysical Institute are part of the mission's team. The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena manages JPL for NASA.

DUBAI (Reuters) - With blanket official media coverage and graphic memorials to the "martyrs" of its nuclear program, Iran is using an international summit to assert that Western nations have failed to isolate it diplomatically and to present itself as a leading voice in the developing world.
The Non-Aligned Movement summit of 120 nations is being held at a time when Iran finds itself at odds with the West over Tehran's support for President Bashar al-Assad as he battles to crush insurgents in Syria, and over nuclear development work seen as leading to atomic weapons, something Iran denies.
In a symbolic display that may have startled some delegates, the charred remnants of vehicles that were blown up in the assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists have been put on show outside the conference centre in Tehran.
The cars are propped up against a backdrop of rich scarlet fabric. Alongside are pictures of Iran's nuclear "martyrs" and summaries of how they were killed.
At least four scientists associated with Iran's nuclear program have been assassinated since 2010, most recently in January this year. Washington has denied any role in the killings while Israel has declined to comment.
"It's quite shocking. I was really taken aback," said one visiting delegate who initially couldn't understand why such wrecks had been placed outside.
The summit has dominated Iran's state-controlled media, which contend that the country's position as head of "the world's second largest international organization" is an effective response to international sanctions and a demonstration of its important place in world affairs.
The leadership has sought to present an air of importance as it takes on the mantle of an organization that many experts say has struggled to remain relevant since the end of the Cold War.
But there are concerns among some members of the movement that Tehran could try to use its position to influence to further its own agenda rather than that of the organization.
"Iran is one of the most important countries in the family of the Non-Aligned Movement," deputy foreign minister Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh said in an interview with state television.
The foreign ministry has taken on a central role in steering Iran through the six-day summit, presenting the theocratic Shi'ite state as a modern, progressive country, an image that contrasts with the inflammatory statements from senior figures that usually dominate the headlines.
Press TV, Iran's state-run English-language news channel, has previewed the summit with a slick promotional advert showing footage of U.N Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi before cutting to picturesque images of Iran's most historic sites.
The network has devoted hours of coverage to the summit, with regular live updates from the conference and interviews with delegates that affirm Iran's positive role.
"The presence of a huge number of delegates proved that all the pressure not to attend Tehran failed," Yousry Abu Shadi, a member of Egypt's delegation, told Press TV on Tuesday.

Broadcasting schedules for the state-run Channel One television network show it will provide live cover of the event for five hours on Thursday and Friday, when more than 50 heads of state gather for the final two days, the ISNA news agency reported.
For the last two days, Iranian officials have boasted about the summit proceeding smoothly, with one saying that Iran had become "the focal point for political consultations".
On Tuesday, more than 50 foreign ministers sat down to debate the draft declarations on a range of issues including "upholding the movement against occupation and military aggression and the rights of members to benefit from peaceful nuclear energy," the state news agency, IRNA reported.
"Domestically, the regime is putting out a rallying cry to its people amidst a serious economic and political situation," said Scott Lucas, founder of EU Worldview, a news site that specializes in monitoring Iranian media.
"Internationally, they're trying to counter their isolation and this is the obvious showpiece to do it. But there hasn't been much substance coming out. They have to do something beyond the propaganda display to have any longer-term impact," he added.
The Islamic Republic has played the event as a great victory against the United States, its old enemy, said Sadeq Zibakalam of Tehran University.
"It says we're powerful and kicking," he added.
Despite its publicity drive and Tehran's claims it will act in the common interests of the Non-Aligned Movement, there are concerns that Tehran is using the body for its own purposes.
"All of us here in Tehran recognize there are some issues it has to deal with and our expectation is that uniquely Iranian issues do not hijack the movement," Indonesian foreign minister Marty Natalegawa told Reuters by telephone from Tehran.
Iran's representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, told reporters on the sidelines of the summit that Iran would not halt enriching uranium for "even one second", Iranian media reported.
"At least to the Iranian people, Iran is using the summit to get across its own messages," said Zibakalam.
Natalegawa said the movement had a unified position on calling for all member states to meet their obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and that included Iran.
"We're calling on Iran to comply and co-operate closely with the IAEA," he said referring to the U.N. nuclear watchdog's repeated request for greater access to Iranian atomic sites.
In contrast to the nuclear issue, there has been precious little coverage of discussions on the crisis in Syria, regarded as the trickiest issue at the summit for Iran, Assad's main ally in the region.
A resolution passed by the U.N. General Assembly this month indicated a majority of NAM members are critical of the Syrian government's actions in attempting to crush an insurgency that has cost the lives of about 20,000 people.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Torrential rain and flooding from Tropical Storm Isaac will bring relief to a large chunk of drought-stricken cropland but will stall early harvest of corn, soybeans and rice, an agricultural meteorologist said on Tuesday.
Isaac was near hurricane force as it bore down on the northern U.S. Gulf Coast. It was expected to make landfall in the New Orleans area, seven years after the city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
"It will barrel first into southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi leaving one and a half feet or more of rain, and three to five inches or more in the central and southeast Midwest," said Don Keeney, meteorologist for MDA EarthSat Weather.
He said the downpours would bring welcome moisture ahead of fall seeding of the U.S. winter wheat crop. But mature corn, soybeans and rice, already weakened by the worst drought in over 50 years, could suffer substantial further losses from high winds, heavy rains and localized flooding. He also said wet conditions could lead to crop diseases.
"There won't be much rain in the north, such as northern Illinois, Michigan or Wisconsin, but two to three inches will be the norm, with up to four inches elsewhere in areas such as central and southeast Missouri, central and southern Illinois, Indiana and Ohio," he said.
Early plantings of crops and a summer of relentless heat and drought pushed crops to maturity, leading to a record or near record early start for harvesting.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Monday said 6 percent of the U.S. corn crop had been harvested and 26 percent of the crop was mature, most of that in the U.S. South and in the path of the expected torrential rainfall.
USDA said 8 percent of the soybean crop was dropping leaves or mature, and rice harvest was 27 percent complete. It said 24 percent of the U.S. cotton crop bolls were open and ready for harvest.
Isaac was located about 105 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River Tuesday morning, with top sustained winds of 70 miles per hour. It was moving northwest at 7 mph.
The storm was more than 400 miles wide. Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said the worst effects may be in Mississippi and Alabama.

Security breaches happen so often nowadays, you're probably sick of hearing about them and all the ways you should beef up your accounts. Even if you feel you've heard it all already, though, unfortunately, today's password-cracking tools are more advanced and cut through the clever password tricks many of us use. Here's what's changed and what you should do about it.
Background: Passwords are easier to crack than ever
Our passwords are much less secure than they were just a few years ago, thanks to faster hardware and new techniques used by password crackers. Ars Technica explains that inexpensive graphics processors enable password-cracking programs to try billions of password combinations in a second; what would have taken years to crack now may take only months or maybe days.
Making matters much worse is hackers know a lot more about our passwords than they used to. All the recent password leaks have helped hackers identify the patterns we use when creating passwords, so hackers can now use rules and algorithms to crack passwords more quickly than they could through simple common-word attacks.
Take the password "Sup3rThinkers"?a password which would pass most password strength tests because of its 13-character length and use of mixed case and a number. Web site How Secure Is My Password? estimates it would take a desktop computer about a million years to crack, with a 4 billion calculations-per-second estimate. It would take a hacker just a couple of months now, Ars Technica notes:
Passwords such as "mustacheehcatsum" (that's "mustache" spelled forward and then backward) may give the appearance of strong security, but they're easily cracked by isolating their patterns, then writing rules that augment the words contained in the [2009 hack of online games service] RockYou [...]and similar lists. For [security penetration tester] Redman to crack "Sup3rThinkers", he employed rules that directed his software to try not just "super" but also "Super", "sup3r", "Sup3r", "super!!!" and similar modifications. It then tried each of those words in combination with "thinkers", "Thinkers", "think3rs", and "Think3rs".
In other words, hackers are totally on to us!
What You Can Do: Strengthen your passwords by making them unique and completely unpredictable
We've suggested plenty of strong password tips over the years, but in light of the faster and newer cracking capabilities, these are worth reviewing.
1. Avoid predictable password formulas
The biggest problem is we're all padding our passwords the same way (partly because most companies limit your password length and require certain types of characters). When required to use mix of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols, most of us:
Not only are these patterns obvious to professional password guessers, even substituting vowels for numbers ("F1d01!") or appending another word ("G00dF1d01!") wouldn't help much, since hackers are using the patterns against us and appending words from the master crack lists together.
Other clever obfuscation techniques, such as shifting keys to the left or right or using other keyboard patterns are also now sniffed out by hacking tools. As one commenter wrote in the Ars Technica article, hackers use keyword walk generators to emulate millions of keyboard patterns.
The solution: Don't do what everyone else is doing. Avoid the patterns above and remember the basics: don't use a single dictionary word, names, or dates in your password; use a mix of character types (including spaces); and make your passwords as long as possible. If you have a template for how you create memorable passwords, it's only secure if no one else is using that rule. (Check out IT security pro Mark Burnett's collection of the top 10,000 most common passwords, which he says represents 99.8% of all user passwords from leaked databases, or this list of 500 most common passwords in one page.)
2. Use truly random passwords
Use multiple unrelated words for your strong, long password: Using a passphrase is more secure and more memorable than complicated but shorter passwords, as web comic xkcd pointed last year. Longer and simpler passwords trump shorter and more complex ones?but only if the words you use are truly random. If you're using a common quote or saying for your passphrase, you're a target, because hackers' dictionaries include common quotes, phrases, titles, and lyrics?and they can easily employ rules to use just the first letter of each word or other similar pattern. "To be or not to be" and "2b30rn0t2b3" and "tbontb" might all very well take just seconds to crack thanks to fast algorithms, so make your passphrase truly unique and random. (The xkcd password generator can pick four random words for you.)
The best option is to use a password generator and manager: While the passphrase approach might be good for, say, your computer login or the few cases you need to remember your password, the best option is to generate a truly random, long, and complex password. This avoids the problem of easily cracked patterns and word lists. LastPass, KeePass, or 1Password can all generate a random password for you. 3. Use a unique password for each site
No matter what passwords you choose or create, this is the most important security strategy of all: Use a different password for each site. This limits the damage that can be done if/when there's a security breach?if your password is compromised on one site, at least all your other accounts are protected.

Certain apes appear to be much smarter than others, with at least one chimpanzee now characterized as being "exceptional" when compared to other chimps.
The standout chimp, an adult female in her 20's named Natasha, scored off the charts in a battery of tests. The findings, published in the latest Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, suggest that geniuses exist among non-humans, but that no one attribute constitutes intelligence.
Instead, a perfect storm of abilities seems to come together to create the Einsteins of the animal kingdom. Natasha's keepers at the Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary in Uganda knew she was special even before the latest study.

"The caretakers named Natasha as the smartest chimpanzee, precisely the same chimpanzee that our tests had revealed to be exceptional," study authors Esther Herrmann and Josep Call of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology wrote.
"All three of the most experienced caretakers included Natasha in their lists (of the most intelligent chimps)," they added.
Natasha has made headlines over the months for her attention-grabbing antics. For instance, she repeatedly escaped her former enclosure, surrounded by an electric fence. She did this by tossing branches at the fence until she didn't see a spark, letting her know that the power was off.
She also learned how to tease humans, beckoning them to throw food her way, only to spray the unsuspecting person with water.
Herrmann and Call decided to study this chimp, along with numerous others, to see if there really are chimp prodigies among non-human great apes. To do this, the researchers created a multi-part mental challenge consisting of eight tasks.
For the first task, the chimps had to find hidden food, testing their spatial knowledge. For the second, the chimps wielded a tool ? avoiding a trap ? to again obtain a food reward. The remaining tasks demonstrated understanding of things like color, size and shape.

"We identified some individuals who consistently scored well across (the) multiple tasks," wrote the authors, who again made note of Natasha, who aced nearly every task.

The researchers could not identify "a general intelligence factor." They instead indicate that ape intelligence might be a bundling of skills related to learning, tool usage, understanding of quantities, and an ability to reach conclusions based on evidence and reasoning.
As the saying goes, necessity may be the mother of invention and, at least in some cases, one reason behind chimp cleverness.
Call, for example, told Discovery News about chimps that make tools for extracting termites out of mounds. The process requires several steps.
"They uproot the stem or use their teeth to clip the stem at the base and then remove the large leaf from the distal end by clipping it with their teeth before transporting the stem to the termite nest, where they complete tool manufacture by modifying the end into a 'paint brush' tip by pulling the stem through their teeth, splitting the probe lengthwise by pulling off strands of fiber, or separating the fibers by biting them," he said.

As for why only some chimps go through such an elaborate process, "a lot depends on the ecological constraints and needs," he said.
In terms of other animals, Herrmann and Call mention the dogs Rico and Chaser, who knew the meaning of hundreds of words.
"Interestingly," the scientists point out, "all of these dogs (considered to be very smart) are border collies. And many of their owners reported that they did not train the dogs to play the fetching game; it was the dogs who trained them!"
The jury is still out on what exactly constitutes such cleverness. The researchers propose that more studies be conducted, with "tasks that capture cognitive, motivational and temperament dimensions."
That's because, in part, a willingness to learn and a positive attitude seem to make as big of a difference in dogs, chimps and other animals as they do in humans.

Before Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace came back to the theaters earlier this year converted for 3D, the plan was to bring the other five movies to theaters one at a time each year, but that has apparently changed. At the Star Wars Celebration VI event in Orlando (where we first found out about the Blu-ray release two years ago) Lucasfilm announced that Episodes II and III in 3D will be released in theaters back to back in fall of 2013, arriving September 20th and October 11th, respectively. Missing so far from the announcement? A reason for the back-to-back release or any word on Blu-ray 3D plans. In lieu of more details, although it means Attack of the Clones will come back later in the year than Phantom Menace did, with any luck this accelerated schedule is a good omen for the original trilogy's return. Of course, we'll have to wait and see what magic can be worked with those older film and special effects elements, however IGN apparently found an early preview of the Episode II 3D footage to be promising.
