Winds, winter storms snarl some holiday travel (Reuters)

DENVER (Reuters) ? High winds and snow slowed travelers in Colorado and Nebraska ahead of the new year, as many Americans hit the roads over the holiday weekend, officials said on Saturday.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for eastern Colorado, parts of Nebraska, Wyoming and the Dakotas. The warning was in effect until sundown on Saturday when the winds were expected to die down.

The weather service also issued a winter storm warning for a band stretching from northwest Iowa, across a swath of Minnesota that includes the Twin Cities and through west central Wisconsin into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

In Minnesota, afternoon rain was expected to turn to snow, with totals of 1 to 4 inches forecast in most areas accompanied by winds of 30- to 35-miles per hour on Saturday evening with gusts of 50 mph possible, the weather service said.

"The combination of accumulating snow, strong winds and falling temperatures will make travel difficult on area roadways, particularly during the late evening into the overnight hours," the Twin Cities weather service office said.

In Iowa, where Republicans gather on Tuesday for caucuses marking the first big step in the U.S. presidential race, strong winds of 30 to 40 mph were expected Saturday night and through New Year's Day.

On the high plains of Colorado, Interstate 76 from east of Denver to the Nebraska state line was closed to all high-profile vehicles, including trailers and sports utility vehicles, the state Department of Transportation said.

There was nearly zero visibility on Interstate 80 in southern Nebraska due to wind and blowing snow, the Nebraska State Patrol said.

Blowing and drifting snow in the mountains and swirling dust on the eastern plains of Colorado will make traveling difficult for motorists, said Jim Kalina, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder, Colorado.

The buffeting winds have also hurt the state's lucrative ski industry over the busy holiday weekend. All lifts at the Breckenridge Ski Resort west of Denver were closed on Saturday morning.

"Until high winds abate, most of the mountain remains on a delayed opening," the resort said on its website.

In the town of Breckenridge, about 5,000 customers were without power due to gusts that brought down power lines, Xcel Energy spokeswoman Michelle Aguayo said.

At the Winter Park ski resort west of Denver, lifts were operating on the lower part of the mountain, but not at elevations of 10,000 feet and above, said Mistalynn Lee, spokeswoman for the resort.

"Safety is always first, but we have high hopes the winds will die down and we can open all the lifts," Lee said.

The Colorado Department of Transportation closed the 11,000-foot Loveland Pass traversed by U.S. Route 6 on Saturday due to blowing and drifting snow, the agency's website said.

12 Must-See Skywatching Events in 2012 (SPACE.com)

As the year 2011 comes to a close, some might wonder what is looming sky-wise for 2012? What celestial events might we look forward to seeing??

I've selected what I consider to be the top 12 "skylights" for this coming year, and list them here in chronological order. Not all these events will be visible from any one locality ? for the eclipses, for instance, you'll probably have to do some traveling ? but many can be observed from the comfort of your backyard.

Hopefully your local weather will cooperate on most, if not all, of these dates. Clear skies!

Jan. 4: Quadrantid meteor shower peaks

This meteor shower reaches its peak in the predawn hours of Jan. 4 for eastern North America. The Quadrantid meteor shower is a very short-lived meteor display, whose peak rates only last several hours.?The phase of the moon is a bright waxing gibbous, normally prohibitive for viewing any meteor shower, but the moon will set by 3 a.m., leaving the sky dark for a few hours until the first light of dawn; that's when?you'll have the best shot at seeing many of these bluish-hued meteors.?

From the eastern half of North America, a single observer might count on seeing as many as 50-to-100?"Quads" in a single hour. From the western half of the continent the display will be on the wane by the time the moon sets, with hourly rates probably diminishing to around 25 to 50 meteors.

Feb. 20 to March 12: Best evening apparition of Mercury

In February and March, the "elusive" innermost planet Mercury moves far enough from the glare of the sun to be readily visible soon after sunset. Its appearance will be augmented by two other bright planets (Venus and Jupiter), which also will be visible in the western sky during this same time frame.

Mercury will arrive at its greatest elongation from the sun March 5. It will be quite bright (-1.3-to-0 magnitude) before this date and will fade rapidly to +1.6 magnitude thereafter. Astronomers measure the brightness of objects in terms of magnitude, with lower numbers corresponding to brighter objects.

March 3: Mars arrives at opposition

On March 3, the?Earth will be passing Mars?as the two planets wheel around the sun in their respective orbits.?Because?Mars reaches aphelion ? its farthest point from the sun ? on Feb. 15, this particular opposition will be?an unfavorable one. In fact,?two days after opposition, Mars will?be closest to Earth at a distance of 62.6 million miles.

Compare this with the August 2003 opposition when Mars?was only 34.6 million miles away.? Nonetheless, even at this unfavorable opposition the fiery-hued Mars will be an imposing?naked-eye sight, shining at magnitude -1.2, just a?bit dimmer than Sirius, the brightest star, and will be visible in the sky all night long. ? ?

March 13: Brilliant "double planet"

The two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, team up to make for an eye-catching sight in the western sky soon after sunset. They will be separated by 3 degrees on this evening, Venus passing to the northwest (upper right) of Jupiter and shining nearly eight times brighter than "Big Jupe." Although they will gradually go their separate ways after this date, on March 25 and 26, a crescent moon will pass by, adding additional beauty to this celestial scene.

May 5: Biggest full moon of 2012

The moon turns full at 11:35 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time and just 25 minutes later it will arrive at its closest point to the Earth in 2012, at a distance of 221,801 miles.?Expect a large range in ocean tides (exceptionally low to exceptionally high) for?the next few days.?[Photos: 'Supermoon' of 2011]

May 20: Annular eclipse of the sun

The path of annularity for this eclipse starts over eastern China and sweeps northeast across southern and central Japan.?The path continues northeast then east, passing just south of Alaska's Aleutian Island chain. The path then turns to the southeast, making landfall in the western United States along the California-Oregon coast. It will pass over central Nevada, southern Utah, northern Arizona, the extreme southwest corner of Colorado and most of New Mexico before coming to an end over northern Texas.

Since the disk of the moon will appear smaller than the disk of the sun, it will create a "penny on nickel" effect, with a fiery ring of sunlight shining around the moon's dark silhouette. Locations that will witness this eerie sight include Eureka and Reading, Calif.; Carson City, Reno and Ely, Nev.; Bryce Canyon in Utah; Arizona's Grand Canyon; Albuquerque and Santa Fe in New Mexico and just prior to sunset for Lubbock, Tex.

A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible over a large swath of the United States and Canada, including Alaska and Hawaii, but no eclipse will be visible near and along the Atlantic Seaboard.

June 4: Partial eclipse of the moon

This partial?lunar eclipse favors the Pacific Ocean; Hawaii sees it high in the sky during the middle of its night.?Across North America the eclipse takes place between midnight and dawn. The farther east one goes, the closer the time of moonset coincides with the moment that the moon enters the Earth's dark umbral shadow.

In fact, over the Northeastern United States and eastern Canada, the only evidence of this eclipse will be a slight shading on the moon's left edge (the faint penumbral shadow) before moonset.?Over the Canadian Maritimes, the moon will set before the eclipse begins.?At maximum, more than one-third of the moon's lower portion (37.6-percent) will be immersed in the umbra.

June 5: Rare transit of Venus across the sun

The passage of Venus in front of the sun?is among the rarest of astronomical events, rarer even than the return of Halley's Comet every 76 years. Only six transits of Venus are known to have been observed by humans before: in 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882 and, most recently, in 2004.

The next one will occur in the year 2114. When Venus is in transit across the solar disk, the planet appears as a distinct, albeit tiny, round black spot with a diameter just 1/32nd of the sun. This size is large enough to readily perceive with the naked eye.? HOWEVER ... prospective observers are warned to take special precautions (as with a solar eclipse) when attempting to view the silhouette of Venus against the blindingly brilliant solar disc.

The beginning of the transit will be visible from all of North America, Greenland, extreme northern and western portions of South America, Hawaii, northern and eastern portions of Asia including Japan, New Guinea, northern and eastern portions of Australia, and New Zealand. The end will be visible over Alaska, all of Asia and Indonesia, Australia, Eastern Europe, the eastern third of Africa, and the island nation of Madagascar.

Aug. 12: Perseid meteor shower

Considered to be among the best of the annual displays thanks to its high rates of up to 90 per hour for a single observer, as well as its reliability. Beloved by summer campers and often discovered by city dwellers who might be spending time in the country under dark starry skies. [10 Perseid Meteor Shower Facts]

Last summer a bright moon wrecked the shower by blotting out many of the fainter streaks, but in 2012 the moon will be three days past last quarter phase on this peak morning ? a fat waning crescent presenting only a minor nuisance for prospective observers.?

Nov. 13: Total eclipse of the sun

The first total solar eclipse since July 2010. Virtually the entire path of totality falls over water. At the very beginning, the track cuts through Australia's Northern Territory just to the east of Darwin, then across the Gulf of Carpentaria, then through northern Queensland, passing over Cairns and Port Douglas before heading out to sea.

The rest of the eclipse path, including the point of the maximum duration of totality (4 minutes, 2 seconds) is, unfortunately, pretty much wasted by falling over the open waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Dec. 13-14: Geminid meteor shower

If there is one meteor display guaranteed to put on a very entertaining show it is the Geminid meteor shower. Now considered by most meteor experts to be at the top of the list, surpassing in brilliance and reliability even the August Perseids.

Bundle warmly against the winter chill; you can start observing as soon as darkness falls on the evening of Dec. 13 as Gemini starts coming up above the eastern horizon and continue through the rest of the night. Around 2 a.m. when Gemini is almost directly overhead, you might see as many as two meteor sightings per minute ? 120 per hour! And the moon is new, meaning that it will not be a factor at all.

Dec. 25: Christmas evening and Jupiter

On Christmas, many will be looking skyward and wondering what that brilliant silvery "star" is hovering just above the waxing gibbous moon. It's not a star (or Santa returning to the North Pole), but the largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter, serving as a sort of holiday ornament with our nearest neighbor in space to cap off a year of interesting and predictable sky events that we all can enjoy!

'Dark Knight Rises' Star Anne Hathaway Talks Catwoman

'It's just a matter of doing your homework and getting underneath the character's skin,' actress says.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Anne Hathaway in "The Dark Knight Rises"
Photo: Warner Bros

While it may feel like the trailers and photos from "The Dark Knight Rises" have shown us a lot from Christopher Nolan's third and supposed final trip to Gotham City, we have yet to see that much from Catwoman.

After spy photos from the set forced their hand, Warner Bros. released an early look at Anne Hathaway's take on Gotham's most notorious cat burglar astride the Batpod, but aside from that photo and her brief but enticing appearance in the theatrical trailer, Selina Kyle's role in "Rises" remains a mystery.

Hathaway did, however, open up to the L.A. Times' Hero Complex during a visit to the London set of "The Dark Knight Rises." She spoke at length about why she loves her so-far divisive costume and how her Catwoman fits into Nolan's Gotham.

Check out our photo analysis of Hathaway's Catwoman.

When Warner Bros. released the first photo of Hathaway in full Catwoman attire, fan reaction ranged from full-fledged support to outright hatred. Hathaway has always stood by the costume's unusual take on the classic look, and she once again made her case to Hero Complex. "I love the costume because everything has a purpose," she said. "Nothing is in place for fantasy's sake, and that's the case with everything in Christopher Nolan's Gotham City."

Once Hathaway won the highly coveted role, she dove deep into research, taking in Catwoman's classic comic book appearance and the original inspirations Bob Kane and Bill Finger used to create the character. Hathaway said she drew inspiration from actress Hedy Lamarr to help shape her performance. "[Lamarr] takes these long, deep, languid breaths and exhales slowly," Hathaway said. "There's a shot of her in [the 1933 film] 'Ecstasy' exhaling a cigarette and I took probably five breaths during her one exhale. So I started working on my breathing a lot."

From there, a lot of the heavy lifting belonged to Nolan and his brother Jonathan, who co-wrote the script with the director. According to Hathaway, this Catwoman follows the pattern set by Nolan's other Gotham City residents. "You look at Heath's performance as the Joker, there was a lot of madness there but there was also a grace and he had a code there. There's a lot of belief and codes of behavior in Gotham and my character has one, too," she said. "A lot of the way she moves and interacts with people is informed by her worldview. Chris has given us all such complex, defined, sophisticated worldviews that it's just a matter of doing your homework and getting underneath the character's skin."

Do you think Anne Hathaway will kill it as Catwoman? Let us know in the comments below!

Victoria Jackson Hates Muslims, Loves Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum

Former SNL cast member Victoria Jackson is never one to hide her staunchly conservative political views. Her latest rant surrounds Muslim infiltration of the U.S.

Jackson, on her web talk show this week, claimed the United States is being overtaken by radical Muslims bent on bringing the nation under Sharia law.

Seriously. Citing insider knowledge, she said the following:

Victoria Jackson Pic

"I just went to a briefing in Washington DC, across the street from the Capitol, at the Longworth building at 8:30 am two days ago and it changed my life."

"For six hours, I saw pictures and names and dates and facts and Islamic law books and Korans, Surahs for six hours and they proved to me that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated our highest positions in government and this is serious."

"Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum are the only GOP candidates to acknowledge the above facts and warn against the present threat of Islamic Law replacing the U.S. Constitution. Very few people in America are informed and educated as I am."

There you have it folks. "Few people are as informed and educated" as Victoria Jackson.

Perhaps she means that ironically, as in she is so ridiculously misinformed, paranoid and uneducated that few people could ever stoop to her level.

Eh, probably not. She also thinks Glee makes kids gay. But we need to subscribe to her Podcast for the unintentional comedy factor alone.

Cape Town Opera returns to London with Porgy

First published: 28 Dec 2011

Cape Town Opera will return to London next summer with a revival of its 2009 production of Porgy And Bess. Following a UK tour, the show will play a two-week run at the London Coliseum.

George Gershwin's iconic opera was written in 1935 and features lyrics by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin. The show, which marks 75 years since George Gershwin's untimely death, will run at London's prestigious opera venue from 11 to 21 July.

Set during the 1920s in America's Deep South, Porgy And Bess tells the story of Porgy, a disabled beggar living in the busy community of Catfish Row, who desperately tries to save the beautiful Bess from her violent boyfriend Crown and the sleazy dope-dealer Sportin' Life.

The seminal piece features songs including Summertime, I Got Plenty Of Nuttin', It Ain't Necessarily So and I Love You Porgy.

Renowned for its gifted young singers, Cape Town Opera is the largest performing arts company in South Africa. The company made its critically acclaimed UK debut with Porgy And Best in 2009 with The Times declaring: "You'd need a heart of concrete not to come out smiling."?

(AP) ? Surrounded at home by energetic grandchildren on his 85th birthday, former Penn State coach Joe Paterno offered his family perspective about the turbulent two months during which he lost his job and learned he had lung cancer.

The Hall of Fame coach wasn't dwelling on being fired over the phone following 46 seasons.

"Joe never sits around and complains about what's happened to him," his son, Jay, said Friday. "We're sitting there on his birthday and he said, 'Look, I've got 17 healthy grandkids, I've got give five healthy kids' ... Joe's always a guy who looks at the bright side (of) everything."

The elder Paterno was dismissed last month in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Paterno was diagnosed several days later with what his family has called a treatable form of lung cancer.

Jay Paterno, the Nittany Lions' quarterbacks coach, said his father, who turned 85 on Dec. 21, is improving as he continues to take radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

"He's a fighter. ... He never gets down," he said. "He fights and this is another challenge for him."

Jay Paterno and the Nittany Lions were at a Dallas high school for a team practice Friday for the TicketCity Bowl on Monday against Houston.

Joe Paterno hasn't spoken publicly since his firing. He has called the allegations troubling and urged the public to let the legal process unfold.

Paterno initially announced his retirement on Nov. 9, effective at the end of the season. That day, he called the scandal "one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

The trustees fired him about 12 hours later, amid mounting criticism that school leaders should have done more to prevent the alleged abuse.

The state attorney general's office has said Joe Paterno, who testified before a grand jury investigating Sandusky, is not a target of the probe. Sandusky is awaiting trial after pleading not guilty earlier this month.

The tense end to Paterno's tenure has raised questions about what's next for Happy Valley's first family of football. Jay Paterno declined to confirm or deny reports he had interviewed for the head-coaching job.

Regardless, the younger Paterno insisted he would consider staying in State College pending the right opportunity ? whether or not it was related to football.

"Let's just say I'm not going to run for attorney general any time soon, or governor or things like that," said the younger Paterno, who campaigned for President Barack Obama in 2008. "I've got to see what's going on, sit down and talk to my wife and kids. ... I don't want to get in a situation of moving just to move."

Staying in Happy Valley would not be difficult "once everything comes out and once everybody sees everything what's happened, I don't think it will be tough," Jay Paterno said. "I think people will realize that ... Joe conducted himself in a way that his consistent with his character, and we'll see that eventually."

When pressed, he declined to offer a timetable or more details other than saying his father was currently concentrating on fighting cancer.

Longtime defensive coordinator Tom Bradley is running the team on an interim basis as the school gets ready for its first postseason without Paterno as head coach since the 1962 Gator Bowl, a 17-7 loss to Florida. Bradley and veteran defensive line coach Larry Johnson have interviewed to replace Paterno.

"I was really tickled I had the opportunity to go in and to really express my views, my vision and my passion for what I do," said Johnson, who, like Bradley, is one of Penn State's top recruiters.

Among other rumored names, Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak this week denied he was interested in the job at his alma mater for the third time since his former coach was fired. Also, Green Bay quarterbacks coach Tom Clements declined comment last week when asked if he was interested in the job and would not confirm a report that he had interviewed.

Acting athletic director David Joyner said Thursday the interviews weren't over, though he hoped to settle on a replacement within the next two weeks so the next coach could talk to recruits before high school seniors can begin to announce their college choices on Feb. 1.

Since Bradley's interim appointment, Johnson and linebackers coach Ron Vanderlinden have been appointed co-defensive coordinators. Vanderlinden, a former head coach at Maryland, declined to address a question about reports he also had interviewed to replace Paterno.

"I'd just like to stay on Houston and football," he said. "We're just grinding away trying to stay focused (so) if it could just stay football related."

All-American defensive tackle Devon Still was held out of practice Friday, slowly walking the sideline favoring his right leg. A team spokesman said Still had turf toe and would be fine for the bowl game.

Starting quarterback Matt McGloin suited up, stretched and tossed footballs while kneeling, though he was held out of full practice again. His availability for Monday remains unclear as he recovers from a concussion and seizure suffered following a locker room altercation Dec. 17 with receiver Curtis Drake.

Jay Paterno said backup Rob Bolden ? who split time with McGloin earlier this year ? likely would start with the hope that McGloin would be available in an emergency.

Chad Alibozek
Junior, Hoosac Valley

The Hurricanes? steadiest regular season performer, Alibozek has won the Berkshire Classic, the de facto individual county championship, two of the last three years. Two years ago, he finished second.

The coach?s take: It?s unbelievable to watch him play. He?s really got the total game. I wish everyone would practice as much as Chad.

-- Hoosac coach Jay Sniezek Hayden Jarck
Senior,Pittsfield

The linchpin of Pittsfield?s post-season run, Jarck shot a 7-over par at the Ludlow Country Club, along with teammate Adam Brickle. Those scores helped the Generals finish third in Western Mass. Division I. At the state tournament in Millis, Jarck was the county?s top finisher again with a three-over par 75 to tie for sixth. That keyed the Generals? 12th-place overall state finish.

The coach?s take: Last year, he was real good. But this year, he took it to a whole new level. He?s by far the best player I?ve ever coached.

-- PHS coach Lucas Polidoro

Thomas Villetto
Junior, Lenox

The most consistent golfer on the Millionaires? Western Mass. Division III champions. He finished fourth overall at the Western Mass. tournament, and then followed up with a sixth-place finish in the state meet. The Millionaires finished ninth in the state. This is Villetto?s

second consecutive All-Eagle selection.

The coach?s take: Tom is a competitor. This year, he started slowly, but as the year went on, he got his game under control, and he turned in his best scores in the biggest matches. I think he?s going to be great next year.

-- Lenox coach Dick Salinetti

Bryan Cota
Senior, McCann Tech

This will be Cota?s third consecutive year on the All-Eagle team. Finished tied for second in the Western Mass. Division III golf tournament, with a 75 at the Berkshire Hills Country Club.

The coach?s take: I didn?t have to do a lot of coaching with him. He taught me a few things, to be honest. It was fun to watch him attack a course, and shape shots and play so skillfully. We will miss him.

-- McCann coach Justin Kratz

Shawn Folan
Senior, Wahconah

Rebounded nicely to finish second in the Western Mass. D-II meet, despite shooting a 9 on the par-5 12th hole at Springfield?s Franconia Golf Course. Folan was the Warriors? most consistent golfer this season.

The coach?s take: Great work ethic, but I was most impressed by the things you didn?t see. He helped me bring along some of the young guys, which was a big help. And I think if he had not had that one bad hole, he?d have won Western Mass.

-- Wahconah coach Pete Terpak

Bryan Levardi
Senior, Taconic

Finished fourth overall in the Western Mass. Division I golf tournament. Finished third in the Berkshire Classic with a five-over par 79 at the Berkshire Hills Country Club.

An opposing view: Very sound fundamentally, very consistent. He was Taconic?s leader this year.

-- Lenox coach Dick Salinetti

Matt Freitag
Senior, Hoosac Valley

Freitag came on late in the season for the Hurricanes, shooting a 77 at the Division II state tournament in Northborough, good for 16th and the best score among county golfers. He also had a strong finish in the Western Mass. tournament, shooting an 83 to finish sixth overall.

The coach?s take: He is kind of overshadowed by Chad [Alibozek], but he?s a hard worker, and he was only one stroke behind Chad in average. He practices just as hard as Chad, too.

-- Sniezek

Gov't to pay family $17.8M for military jet crash

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the U.S. government to pay $17.8 million to a family that lost four members when a Marine Corps fighter jet crashed into their San Diego home in 2008.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller's ruling came after a nonjury trial between the Department of Justice and the family, who sought $56 million for emotional and monetary loss.

Don Yoon lost his 36-year-old wife, Youngmi Lee Yoon; his 15-month-old daughter, Grace; his 2-month-old daughter, Rachel; and his 59-year-old mother-in-law, Seokim Kim Lee, who was visiting from Korea to help her eldest daughter take care of their children.

Yoon said in a statement that Miller's ruling was "thoughtful, reasoned and just." Yoon broke down crying throughout his testimony, which came three years to the day when he buried his wife and baby girls in the same casket. He told the judge he only looks forward to the day when he can join them.

"Our family is relieved this part of the process is over, but no sum of money will ever make up for the loss of our loved ones," he said.

The Marine Corps has said the plane suffered a mechanical failure but a series of bad decisions led the pilot ? a student ? to bypass a potentially safe landing at a coastal Navy base after his engine failed on Dec. 8, 2008. The pilot ejected and told investigators he screamed in horror as he watched the jet plow into the neighborhood, incinerating two homes.

The case was unique in that the government admitted liability but disputed how much should be paid to Yoon and his extended family. Government lawyers had put economic losses at about $1 million but left it up to Miller to decide how much should be paid for the loss of love and companionship.

Department of Justice attorneys offered their condolences during the trial but questioned how much the family members depended on each other. The law does not allow victims to be compensated for grief, suffering or punitive damages.

The judge said the deaths of the two girls deprived Yoon of "the comfort, companionship, society and love a young child is capable of providing to a new parent and, then, in later life. By all accounts, the Yoon girls would have been raised with traditional cultural and family values emphasizing love and devotion to parents and family."

He ordered Yoon to be awarded nearly $10 million, and his father-in-law to be given nearly $4 million. The rest should go to the father-in-law's three adult children for the loss of their mother, Seokim Kim Lee.

Miller called Seokim Kim Lee an "extraordinary woman whose profound and loving influence greatly molded, directly or indirectly, virtually every plaintiff in this case," after hearing the testimonies of her husband and children, who flew in from Korea to testify.

"And it's that remarkable influence which informs and helps to measure what fair and reasonable compensation should be awarded in this case," Miller said in his written ruling.

Government attorneys could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday.

During the trial, the family's attorney, Brian Panish, showed photographs and videos depicting a close-knit farming family whose lives were shattered on two continents by the crash. Youngmi Lee came to the United States in 2004 to marry Yoon.

Yoon said he harbors no ill will toward the Marine pilot "who did everything he could to prevent this tragedy," but added that his family believes "that misguided attempts by the military to save money and cut costs" contributed to the crash.

"If the cost of paying fair compensation as ordered by this court will be factored into the daily decisions by our military in its operations that affect both military and civilian safety," other families may be saved, the family's statement said.

The military disciplined 13 members of the Marines and the Navy for the errors.

In court filings, Panish noted a case in which San Diego Gas & Electric Co. awarded $55.6 million to the heirs of four U.S. Marines who died in a 2004 accident when their helicopters crashed into power lines at Camp Pendleton. Justice attorneys said during the trial that case was one of the highest claims awarded in California and did not fairly represent this kind of case.

African rhino poaching hits record on Asian demand (Reuters)

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) ? A record number of rhinos were poached this year in South Africa, home to the greatest number of the animals, as rising demand in Asia for their horns led to increased killings of the threatened species.

At least 443 rhinos have been killed in South Africa in 2011, up from 333 last year, the national park service and conservationists said.

The street value of rhinoceros horns has soared to about $65,000 a kilogram, making it more expensive than gold, platinum and in many cases cocaine, as a belief - with no basis in science - has taken hold in recent years in parts of Asia that ingesting it can cure or prevent cancer.

South Africa, home to more than 20,000 rhinos, was losing about 15 animals a year a decade ago. But poaching increased dramatically from about 2007 as a growing affluent class in places such as Vietnam and Thailand began spending more on rhino horn for traditional medicine.

The number of rhinoceroses dying unnatural deaths in South Africa, either through illegal poaching or legal hunts, has reached a level likely to lead to population decline, according to a study by Richard Emslie, an expert in the field.

About half of poaching takes place in Kruger National Park, the country's flagship park covering an area about the size of Israel, where soldiers and surveillance aircraft have been deployed in recent months to slow the carnage.

The park has been the focal point of an arms race as gangs of poachers sponsored by international crime syndicates have used high-powered weaponry, night vision goggles and helicopters to hunt the animals, investigators said.

In a separate study, the number of large scale ivory seizures is likely set a record this year, pointing to increased African elephant poaching.

South Africa, home to over 90 percent of the rhinos in Africa, grants licenses for legal hunts, with a growing number of the horns then mounted as trophies, shipped to Asia and sold on the black market, according to police and customs officials.

Many poachers were trained by Mozambique's military or police and are now living in squalor in the border region next to Kruger, South African investigators said.

Their cut of the rhino money is relatively small compared to other players in the international trade but is considered a fortune at home.

Rhino horn has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine, where it was ground into a powder and often mixed with hot water to treat a variety of maladies including rheumatism, gout, high fever and even devil possession.

In recent years, it has also taken on a reputation for being an aphrodisiac and cancer cure.

"Nothing is more tragic than to see this totally unnecessary and brutal killing of an animal for its horn, and the horn in turn has zero medicinal value," said Pelham Jones, a leader of the South Africa Private Rhino Owners Association.

Know the Signs of Alzheimer's (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 28 (HealthDay News) -- Knowing the warning signs of Alzheimer's disease is important because it may lead to an early diagnosis, experts say.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, early diagnosis enables patients to:

  • Plan ahead for the future.
  • Potentially take part in a clinical drug trial.
  • Start treatments that may help maintain independence for a longer time and possibly improve symptoms.
  • Be involved in decisions about their care, living options, financial and legal matters.
  • Cultivate relationships with doctors and care partners.
  • Take advantage of care and support services that make it easier for patients and families to manage the disease.

Alzheimer's disease, a progressive brain disorder, is the most common type of dementia seen in the elderly. In a recent news release, the association listed the 10 warnings signs of Alzheimer's:

  • Memory loss that disrupts daily life. This includes forgetting recently learned information, forgetting important dates or events, repeatedly asking for the same information, and relying on memory aides or family members for things that used to be handled on one's own.
  • Challenges in planning or solving problems. For example, becoming unable to develop or follow a plan or work with numbers, having difficulty keeping track of monthly bills or following a recipe, difficulty concentrating, and taking much longer than normal to do things one has done before.
  • Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, work or at leisure. This may include getting lost while driving in a familiar area or needing help using the microwave.
  • Confusion with time or place. People may forget where they are or how they got there.
  • Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships, such as judging distance.
  • New problems with spoken or written words. A typical example is calling things by the wrong name.
  • Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps in order to find lost objects.
  • Declines in judgment or decision-making. For example, giving large amounts of money to telemarketers or paying less attention to grooming and keeping clean.
  • Withdrawal from work or social activities.
  • Changes in mood and personality. For example, becoming easily upset as well as confused, depressed, fearful, anxious or suspicious.

Chicago Baseball Report :: Chicago Cubs: Team Adds Former Tampa Bay Rays Pitcher Andy Sonnanstine

The Chicago Cubs signed relief pitcher Andy Sonnanstine, formerly of the Tampa Rays, to a non-guaranteed split contract yesterday. It was also clarified that last week?s signing of former Colorado Rockies pitcher, Manny Corpas, was for a one-year non-guaranteed split contract. This means both pitchers aren?t guaranteed a major league salary if they are optioned to the minor leagues in 2012.

The Cubs are taking fliers on both pitchers, hoping to reinforce their bullpen after dealing away Sean Marshall to the Cincinnati Reds for starting pitcher Travis Wood, and prospects. Sonnanstine was rarely used last year and carries with him a career ERA that is north of 5. Corpas hasn?t pitched since 2010 after having Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm.

It?s business as usual for team president Theo Epstein and the Cubs during their current overhaul of the team. With one unsexy move after the other, Epstein and GM Jed Howry continue to plug in veterans from baseball?s over-the-hill heap, while trying to reload the organization?s farm system.

Andy Sonnanstine?s career numbers (including minor league appearances):

The big glaring void at the moment is the Cubs? lack of a major league first baseman. Odds are that they won?t sign Carlos Pena, who despite 28 home runs and an OBP of .357 in 2011 with the Cubs, won?t be returning because he can still demand a salary in the neighborhood of $10 million.

Early trade rumors had Brewers free agent first baseman Prince Fielder possibly coming to Chicago after an offer was reportedly made by the Cubs, but the continued trend of recent moves by the Cubs front office is making that dream not a reality. Fielder has been reportedly looking for a deal similar to Albert Pujols, who signed with the Los Angeles Angels for 10 years, $250 million.

Another possibility is the San Diego Padres? young first baseman, Anthony Rizzo. With the Padres? recent trade involving Mat Latos going to the Cincinnati Reds, the Padres received prospect Yonder Alonso, a top prospect at first base for the Reds. This could make Rizzo expendable, and seeing as Cubs GM Jed Hoyer brought Rizzo to the Padres during his time there, he might be interested in bringing Rizzo to Chicago.

Whatever happens with the Cubs? first baseman search, it will be fascinating to see what transpires in 2012 for the team. With a patchwork lineup blending with current Cubs veterans and their bloated, no-trade-clause-laden contracts in 2012, will fans come out to Wrigley Field? Will the team enjoy more success than during their miserable 2011 campaign.

The plan has been put into motion by Epstein, and with every signing of a replacement-level veteran, it probably doesn?t get any easier for a portion of Cubs fans. Even though rebuilding is obviously required after the Jim Hendry era, fans have to know that rebuilding can sometimes be ugly, and results won?t be immediate.

Israel Sends a Missile Up the Ass of Islamic Jihad Terrorist In Gaza Who Has Been Firing Rockets Into Israel

Okay, we can remove Abdullah Telbani's name from those planning to attend the Haj next summer as he said hello to an Israeli missile today in payment for his work at sending rockets into southern Israel from Gaza. The Islamic Jihad terrorist had two buddies with him that apparently are now walking with permanent limps.

And someone said there was never any good news on a Tuesday! :)

The report comes from The Jerusalem Post.

Air Force kills Gazan terrorist in missile attack

The Israel Air Force, working with the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), fired a missile at Gazan terrorists involved in recent attacks on Israel, killing one and injuring two others, Israeli media reported Tuesday.

Hamas identified the man as Abdullah Telbani, an operative of Islamic Jihad's Saraya Al-Quds wing in his 20s.

Two other Palestinians were also injured in the attack when the explosion ripped through their tuk tuk, a motorized rickshaw, according to medics in the Strip. They were taken to Amal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.

The IDF Spokesman's Office said Hamas was responsible for all terrorist activity coming out of Gaza.

"The IDF will not tolerate attempts to harm Israeli citizens or IDF soldiers and will continue to operate strongly and decisively against anyone who uses terrorism against Israel," the spokesman said in a statement.

Army radio reported that the militant was in his vehicle when the missile hit, and that the defense establishment was preparing for rockets in response to the attack.

Palestinians fired two short-range rockets into Israel on Sunday and Monday, causing no damage. No Gaza factions claimed responsibility for those attacks.

Israel has also said it is on alert for attempts by Gazan gunmen to slip into neighboring Egypt and attack it from there.
