Bam! How comic books teach math and science

No Starch Press

"The Manga Guide to the Universe" surveys the cosmos in comics.

By Alan Boyle

Can you really learn relativity from a comic book? The Japanese have been using manga for decades to teach complex subjects, and now Americans are doing it too.

No Starch Press, a San Francisco publishing house, puts out a whole line of manga-style books on math and science, picked up from?the original Japanese and translated for the American market.?Yes, there's a "Manga Guide to Relativity," as well as calculus, linear algebra, biochemistry and other head-banging subjects.

The plot lines may sound sappy to grown-ups. Usually?they involve a cute schoolgirl or schoolboy who's challenged by an equally cute teacher to master a seemingly impenetrable subject. But Bill Pollock, the founder and president of No Starch Press, says the books get the job done,?especially?for students who are at a crucial age for math and science education.

"We're not out to publish the best manga ever," Pollock told me. "The manga is a vehicle."

Educational comics are nothing new, of course: Classics Illustrated, for example, was delivering?comic-book versions of English lit and science class back in the '50s. (I still get the heebie-jeebies when I?recall the Classics Illustrated version of "Jane Eyre" that sat in?the comic-book?box at Grandma's house.) More recently, cartoonist Larry Gonick has been using the comic-book format to explain?subjects ranging from chemistry to physics to sex. This year, one of the items on my holiday book list is "Feynman," a graphic-novel biography of the?bongo-playing?physicist.

But?manga books come from a different cultural tradition ? the same tradition that spawned Pokemon, Hello Kitty and other Japanese imports that American kids have grown up with. In Japan, there's a manga subgenre ("gakushu manga") that is completely focused on education. These books, which range around 200 pages in length, are the ones that have been adapted into English-language "manga guides."

Japanese researchers have reported that manga books can deliver information in a shorter time and make a stronger impression than conventional textbooks. "Manga's textual hybridity is utilized to promote the readers' effective learning, as verbal and iconographic tests place multiple layers of information in context and project a focused content," Satsuki Murakami and Mio Bryce?wrote in the International Journal of the Humanities.

Panels from "The Manga Guide to Biochemistry" delve into ribosomes and their role in the cell.

"I look at it as a lecture in a book," Pollock said. "It's as if you're in there learning together with this cartoon character."

The?lecture can be tough sledding at times. There's no easy way to have a cartoon character?utter dialogue like this: "A Lineweaver-Burk reciprocal plot is created by ... finding reciprocals for all the numeric values on the horizontal and vertical axes!" But Pollock says?he's seen the?manga technique work, particularly for teenage girls, who tend to lag behind?teenage boys when it comes to interest in math and science.

"I've always liked the idea of exposing people to something exciting, and higher math is exciting," he said.

In the past few days, there's been a debate percolating over how the genders are portrayed in science education ? as seen, for example, in the marketing of "science kits for girls" that focus on perfumery, cosmetics and spa care. Some have raised concerns about manga?as well, in part because of the short skirts and ditzy demeanor?sometimes exhibited by the?female characters. (To be fair, manga boys can be just as ditzy as the girls.)

"Some people think manga is sexist," Pollock said. "The reality is, I've had multiple parents come to me and tell me that their daughters love the books and now they're getting into math and science. ... We may look at things one way as adults ? but for kids, it totally works."

STEM education ? that is, education in science, technology, engineering and math ? has been a hot topic lately. What totally works for you??Do comic books fit into the equation? Whether you're a student or a teacher, a parent or just an interested grown-up, feel free to weigh in with your comics ... er, comments ... below.

Ex-fiance focus of 'People's Court' missing case (AP)

ORLANDO, Fla. ? Orlando's police chief says a former fiancé is the primary focus of the investigation into a woman who went missing after appearing on "The People's Court" with the suspect to resolve a dispute over a $5,000 engagement ring.

Thirty-three-year-old Michelle Parker of Orlando was last seen Nov. 17. It was the day the previously taped episode aired of the case between her and 40-year-old Dale Smith. The abandoned SUV of the mother of three was found the next day.

Chief Paul Rooney said at a news conference Monday that Smith of Orlando is the probe's focus and there are no other suspects.

He says Smith has refused to take a lie-detector test. The Orlando Sentinel reports that court papers show the couple has a history of violence.

Attempts to find a telephone listing for Smith were unsuccessful.

NASA rover launched to seek out life clues on Mars (Reuters)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) ? An unmanned Atlas 5 rocket blasted off from Florida on Saturday, launching a $2.5 billion nuclear-powered NASA rover toward Mars to look for clues on what could sustain life on the Red Planet.

The 20-story-tall booster built by United Launch Alliance lifted off from its seaside launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 10:02 a.m. EST (3:02 p.m. GMT).

It soared through partly cloudy skies into space, carrying NASA's Mars Science Laboratory on a 354-million mile (556 million km), nearly nine-month journey to the planet.

"I think this mission is an important next step in NASA's overall goal to address the issue of life in the universe," lead scientist John Grotzinger, with the California Institute of Technology, told reporters shortly after the launch.

The car-sized rover, nicknamed Curiosity, is expected to touch down on August 6, 2012, to begin two years of detailed analysis of a 96-mile (154-km) wide impact basin near the Martian equator called Gale Crater.

The goal is to determine if Mars has or ever had environments to support life. It is the first astrobiology mission to Mars since the 1970s-era Viking probes.

Scientists chose the landing site because it has a three-mile-high (4.8-km high) mountain of what appears from orbital imagery and mineral analysis to be layers of rock piled up like the Grand Canyon, each layer testifying to a different period in Mars' history.

The rover has 17 cameras and 10 science instruments, including chemistry labs, to identify elements in soil and rock samples to be dug up by the probe's drill-tipped robotic arm.

'LONG SHOT'

The base of the crater's mountain has clays, evidence of a prolonged wet environment, and what appears to be minerals such as sulfates that likely were deposited as water evaporated.

Water is considered to be a key element for life, but not the only one.

Previous Mars probes, including the rovers Spirit and Opportunity, searched for signs of past surface water.

"We are not a life-detection mission," Grotzinger said. "We have no ability to detect life present on the surface of Mars. It's an intermediate mission between the search for water and future missions, which may undertake life detection."

With Curiosity, which is twice as long and three times heavier than its predecessors, NASA shifts its focus to look for other ingredients for life, including possibly organic carbon, the building block for life on Earth.

"It's a long shot, but we're going to try," Grotzinger said.

Launch is generally considered the riskiest part of a mission, but Curiosity's landing on Mars will not be without drama.

The 1,980-pound (898 kg) rover is too big for the airbag or thruster-rocket landings used on previous Mars probes, so engineers designed a rocket-powered "sky-crane" to gently lower Curiosity to the crater floor via a 43-foot (13-meter) cable.

"We call it the 'six-minutes of terror,'" said Doug McCuistion, director of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, referring to the landing. "It is pretty scary, but my confidence level is really high."

Curiosity is powered by heat from the radioactive decay of plutonium. It is designed to last one Martian year, or 687 Earth days.

Europe talks, consumer confidence send stocks up (AP)

NEW YORK ? Stocks are rising as European leaders race to find more aggressive cures for the region's debt crisis. The market is also getting a boost from a jump in U.S. consumer confidence.

Europe's finance ministers are discussing plans for protecting the region's financial system that would have been off-limits only recently, including having nations cede some financial control to a central authority.

Stocks gained momentum after 10 a.m., when a private research group reported that its Consumer Confidence Index jumped in in November to its highest level since July.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 91 points, or 0.8 percent, to 11,584 just before noon. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 10, or 0.9 percent, to 1,202. The Nasdaq composite rose 6, or 0.3 percent, to 2,533.

Pakistan warns NATO attack threatens Afghanistan peace (Reuters)

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) ? A NATO cross-border air attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers at the weekend threatens cooperation on peace efforts in Afghanistan, Pakistan's army spokesman warned on Monday.

The incident has hurt Washington's efforts both to ease a crisis in relations with Islamabad and stabilize the region as it tries to wind down the war in Afghanistan.

"This could have serious consequences in the level and extent of our cooperation," military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told Reuters.

Adding a new element to tensions, and a diplomatic boost for Islamabad, Pakistan's ally China said it was "deeply shocked" by the incident and expressed "strong concern for the victims and profound condolences for Pakistan."

"China believes that Pakistan's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity should be respected and the incident should be thoroughly investigated and be handled properly," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement on the ministry's website.

Pakistan has been trying to move closer to Asian powerhouse China as ties with the United States have suffered.

China and Pakistan call each other "all-weather friends" and their close ties have been underpinned by long-standing wariness of their common neighbor, India, and a desire to hedge against U.S. influence across the region.

Pakistan's military denied reports that NATO forces in Afghanistan had come under fire before launching the attack. Abbas said the attack lasted two hours despite warnings from Pakistani border posts.

"They were contacted through the local hotline and also there had been contacts through the director-general of military operations. But despite that, this continued," he said.

After a string of deadly incidents in the lawless and confusing border region, NATO and Pakistan set up a hotline that should allow them to communicate in case of confusion over targets, and avoid friendly fire.

"TRAGIC, UNINTENDED"

NATO described the killings as a "tragic, unintended incident" and said an investigation was underway. A Western official and an Afghan security official who requested anonymity said NATO troops were responding to fire from across the border.

Pakistan's military said the strike was unprovoked and has reserved the right to retaliate.

It's possible both explanations are correct: that a retaliatory attack by NATO troops took a tragic, mistaken turn in harsh terrain where differentiating friend from foe can be difficult.

The attack was the latest perceived provocation by the United States, which infuriated Pakistan's powerful military in May with a unilateral special forces raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Last month, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Islamabad and held a town hall meeting to try and win over Pakistanis, held talks with her counterpart and urged all sides to seek peace in Afghanistan.

She also repeated U.S. calls for Pakistan to crack down on militants, especially those who cross the porous border to attack American forces in Afghanistan.

Any goodwill from that trip probably evaporated after the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) strike, which triggered a fresh wave of anti-U.S. sentiment in Pakistan.

The main Pakistani association that delivers fuel to NATO forces in Afghanistan said it would not resume supplies any time soon in protest against the NATO strike.

Nawab Sher Afridi, general secretary of the All Pakistan Oil Tanker Owners Association, said it would reconsider only if the government and the military accept an apology for the incident.

In the Mohmand region, where the attack took place, hundreds of protesting tribesmen yelled "Death to America."

"We should immediately stop cooperation with America in this war. We should stop these attacks, they are becoming intolerable," said Jangreez Khan, a local leader of the ruling Pakistan People's Party.

Aside from growing anger on the street, newspaper editorials are filled with sharp criticism.

"This is time for U.S./NATO/ISAF forces to understand the dark side of wanting to go it alone and think about accepting Pakistani offers for enhanced coordination," said The News.

BEFITTING RESPONSE

The mass-circulation Urdu language press went further.

"We have to send a clear and unequivocal message to NATO and America that our patience has run out. If even a single bullet of foreign forces crosses into our border, then two fires will be shot in retaliation," said Jang newspaper.

The NATO strike has shifted attention away from what critics say is Pakistan's failure to go after militants.

Pakistan vowed to back the U.S. global war on militancy launched after al Qaeda's September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, and won billions of dollars in aid in return.

But the unstable, nuclear-armed country has often been described as an unreliable ally, and the United States has had to resort to controversial drone aircraft strikes against militants on Pakistani territory to pursue its aims.

U.S. frustrations grew so much that President Barack Obama ordered that the raid that killed bin Laden deep inside Pakistan be kept secret, knowing it could make the United States even more unpopular in Pakistan.

Pakistan shut down NATO supply routes into Afghanistan in retaliation for the weekend shooting incident, the worst of its kind since Islamabad allied itself with Washington in 2001.

Pakistan is the route for nearly half of NATO supplies shipped overland to its troops in Afghanistan. Land shipments account for about two thirds of the alliance's cargo.

A similar incident on Sept 30, 2010, which killed two Pakistani service personnel, led to the closure of one of NATO's supply routes through Pakistan for 10 days.

Few believe the strategic alliance between Pakistan and the United States will break, even though the aggrieved military -- the South Asian nation's most powerful institution -- may now feel it needs to assert itself.

Both sides are likely to opt for damage control and then confidence-building measures -- the usual pattern in a frequently troubled relationship.

Solo 'had too much muscle'

Earlier in the week, USA women?s soccer goalie Hope Solo dropped by Anderson Cooper?s new daytime show, ?Anderson? to talk about her ousting from ABC?s Dancing with the Stars.

During the interview, Solo stated that she was not pleased with the way producers portrayed her on the show along with the fact that she felt the judges were too critical of her intensity and her muscular figure:

?I was very naive going into it,? she explained. ?It is very much reality television I think from day one they casted our characters. And we would be rehearsing for seven hours a day. Maks and I were great friends and we had an endearing relationship. The 45 minutes in the whole seven hours that were the most frustrating where I am curing and kicking walls is what America got to see.?

?I was told I had too much muscle and I was too intense and wasn?t dainty,? Solo said.

Below is the video of the full interview:

Black Friday spurs Android growth with record Kindle sales (Appolicious)

Black Friday is known for boosting retail through the remainder of the year, and the new tradition has certainly helped the Android smartphone market. IBM projected that 15 percent of Black Friday sales this year would transact via mobile, and it turns out their expectations were right on track. On Friday evening, IBM Smarter Commerce reported that about 10.3 percent of online sales came through mobile shoppers, and about 17 percent of all shoppers today are using mobile devices.

It really speaks to the importance of mobile marketplaces, with tools like Google Shopper helping to drive advertising and access around online mobile sales. Amazon certainly recognizes the potential behind a mobile economy. Its Android-powered Kindle Fire is the perfect portal for a range of Amazon products, ranging from digital books and magazines to the actual Amazon store. In fact, Amazon saw success on both sides of mobile commerce this Black Friday, selling a record number of Kindle Fire tablets.

Amazon reported this morning that Black Friday resulted in their best-ever sales for Kindle devices, with the Fire leading the pack. Customers purchased ?four times as many Kindle devices as they did last Black Friday?and last year was a great year,? says Dave Limp, vice president for Amazon Kindle. ?In addition, we?re seeing a lot of customers buying multiple Kindles?one for themselves and others as gifts?we expect this trend to continue on Cyber Monday and through the holiday shopping season.? It certainly sounds impressive, but Amazon hasn?t revealed exact sales figures yet. Nevertheless, deep discounts on every Kindle in the product line has consumers snapping up the tablets like hot cakes.

Key to Android commerce is advertising

The success of Android?s tablet sales has incurred rumors that Amazon may venture into the smartphone market next. Facebook is another tech giant that?s expected to soon jump into the smartphone market too, building out its mobile commerce strategy around its social networking platform. Since word of an upcoming Facebook phone emerged about a week ago, speculation on the network?s handset has only grown. They, too, would need an extensive model for extending the Facebook marketplace to the mobile realm, finding more deeply integrated outlets for virtual goods, gaming and advertising.

Advertising is the key to any successful mobile commerce strategy, according to a recent article from The Guardian. This is where Google has the lead. While an Amazon and Facebook phone would likely run on the Android OS, Google is the ultimate winner as this market fleshes out. An Android-powered Facebook phone would be in competition with Google on Google?s own platform, highlighting the impact of the mobile OS and the rise of the smartphone as the most personal of all PCs to date. We could end up with some very different tactics around mobile advertising and commerce should Amazon and Facebook turn to Android for smartphone development, and it will be even more interesting to see how Google continues to maintain some level of control over its ad revenue through extensive mobile commerce and specialized devices.

Schedule Short Workouts As Mini-Breaks to Make Sure You Exercise While Working from Home [Exercise]

Schedule Short Workouts As Mini-Breaks to Make Sure You Exercise While Working from Home For those of us who work remotely or from home on a regular basis, making sure to get some exercise can be difficult when faced with the temptation to sit at a desk for hours on end. The solution is simple: schedule your workouts like you would your lunch or any other break to make sure you get an alert to get up and move around a bit.

Sometimes all you really need to remind yourself that you should get a little exercise is a reminder to take the opportunity. Schedule your favorite calendaring application for a pair of regular 5-15 minute breaks early and late in the day, and make sure to take a little time to lift some hand-weights or get outside for a quick walk around the block. The blog Dumb Little Man has several other tips to help you get some exercise when working at home, like buying your own equipment, but that won't do much good unless you have a good way to remind yourself to use it.

How do you get your exercise when working from home? Share your tips in the comments below.

NBA Lockout Over! Kris Humphries a Free Agent!

An official agreement must still be reached, but it's safe to celebrate, NBA fans: the lockout is over!

Commissioner David Stern and Player's Association leader Billy Hunter appeared at a joint press conference last night and announced that a tentative agreement had been reached, the results of which mean the following: training camps and free agency will begin on December 9. A 66-game season will kick off on Christmas Day.

Kris Humphries Picture

What is the celebrity gossip spin to all this? Kris Humphries is a free agent, of course. Where will Kim's reality TV co-star play ball next season?!?

The bruising power forward averaged a double-double in 2010-2011, growing into one of the few bright spots for the New Jersey Nets. That team may attempt to re-sign him, but its priority will be locking up point guard Deron Williams to a long-term deal.

With no hard cap in place, the Knicks will have the deep pockets to a lure a few key free agents, and we all know how much Kris has embraced the big market lifestyle.

No matter where Humphries ends up playing, only one question really matters: With what cheer will NBA fans taunt him? We've offered a few possibilities below and we welcome any other suggestions:

Occupy LA stands out for camp-city cooperation

(AP) ? When Occupy LA demonstrators recently proclaimed a downtown intersection "our street," police watched as annoyed drivers honked horns and tried to maneuver around gyrating protesters. Officers only moved in after the third intersection takeover ? telling protesters they had to quit or face arrest. The activists turned around and marched back to camp chanting slogans.

That hasn't happened in some other cities and may not have been possible in Los Angeles that long ago.

Occupy LA, a 485-tent camp surrounding City Hall, has marched to a different beat in its drum circle after protesters, police and city officials established a relationship based on dialogues instead of dictates.

As camps in other cities degenerated into unrest that led to mass arrests, Occupy LA has remained largely a peaceful commune. Police arrive on site only when called in to investigate petty crimes. Marches have resulted in only about five spontaneous arrests ? the other 70 or so involved protesters who deliberately got arrested to make a political statement.

City leaders are now hoping for a peaceful end to the 7-week-old camp, announcing Wednesday that protesters will be given a 72-hour deadline to leave sometime next week, a tactic that stands in stark contrast to middle-of-the-night police raids used in other cities.

"Los Angeles has had a real history of heavy-handed tactics with police," said Richard Weinblatt, a police procedures expert and former police chief. "They're taking a very good approach with this. It's a good political sign."

The hands-off strategy perhaps underscores the liberal leanings of a city that has often been known for counterculture movements. But it marks a departure for a police force still striving to emerge from the shadow of the 1991 beating of Rodney King, the Rampart corruption scandal of the late '90s, and more recently, the 2007 crackdown at an immigrants rights rally in which demonstrators and reporters were injured with batons and rubber bullets.

This time, even before the first tent was set up on the City Hall lawn, Jim Lafferty, a lawyer who has been representing Occupy LA, said Police Chief Charlie Beck assured him protesters would be left alone if they remained peaceful. Beck promised no surprise raids would be carried out, said Lafferty, executive director of the National Lawyers Guild's Los Angeles chapter.

Elected city leaders initially embraced the campers. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa handed out plastic ponchos one rainy day. The City Council passed a resolution to support Occupy LA. Officials found an alternate site for a farmers market that the camp displaced.

Protesters have done their part to cooperate. They've readily complied with health inspectors' demands for more portable toilets, trash pickup and food sanitation. They've also worked to tamp down anarchist inciters in the camp who want to provoke authorities, as well as activists with hot tempers.

On one march, when two protesters started an argument that appeared ready to flame into fisticuffs, marchers started yelling at the instigator to "focus" and "keep to the mission."

Organizers have implored riled crowds to keep within the peaceful guidelines of the group and to return to camp when threatened with arrest.

Occupiers say they realize violence is not going to win any points in their struggle for greater economic equality and could alienate many supporters.

"What is most important is that we win the hearts and minds of the people of this city," said organizer Mario Brito. "We're all going to have to remain non-violent."

Police, meanwhile, have held off making arrests while giving protesters ample time to make their statement through civil disobedience, such as lying on the sidewalk in front of a Bank of America branch.

They've negotiated with organizers, sometimes for hours, to end actions without arrest, and assigned veteran detectives, clad in riot helmets, to man front lines against protesters instead of younger officers who may be more prone to act rashly when baited with name-calling.

Police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said officers have set out to build trust.

"We really worked hard to establish a dialogue with people at the camp," he said. "We have a command-level officer assigned to it every day. I'm over there three, four times a day, sometimes just to address rumors."

While acknowledging that violence has been avoided in Los Angeles, some question the precedent set by official leniency.

"You have these people staying out weeks at a time, and police let them break the law. They're encouraged to go further," said John Hawkins, who has tracked the Occupy movement in his blog Right Wing News. "The government has to enforce the law."

Occupy LA has found a powerful ally that holds a lot of sway in City Hall: labor unions. The Service Employees International Union and others have turned out hundreds of people to several marches, giving the Occupy movement needed credibility and numbers. The unions even adopted tents as a protest symbol.

Union leaders have been instrumental in persuading Villaraigosa, a former labor organizer, to hold off on acting against the camp, said Peter Dreier, politics professor at Occidental College.

In conjunction with that, city leaders have had few vocal opponents against Occupy LA, which is located in an area of Los Angeles that comprises almost all government buildings, he noted. In some other cities, such as New York, complaining residents and businesses mounted pressure on officials to clear out the tents.

But as Occupy Los Angeles entered its seventh week with no end in sight, the dialogue started getting strained.

City Hall still made friendly overtures, trying to make a deal with the activists by offering them 10,000 square feet of office space and empty lots for a garden if they would pack up their tents. Fallout after the proposal was made public caused the deal to be rescinded.

On Wednesday, city leaders took a tougher stance: The camp must go the following week, but police said they would give protesters a 72-hour deadline to pack up or face arrest. Even then, remaining protesters will be given two opportunities to change their mind before they are placed in handcuffs.

"No one else has seen fit to do it like this around the country," Lafferty said.

Diabetes drug shows promise in reducing risk of cancer

Thursday, November 24, 2011

An inexpensive drug that treats Type-2 diabetes has been shown to prevent a number of natural and man-made chemicals from stimulating the growth of breast cancer cells, according to a newly published study by a Michigan State University researcher.

The research, led by pediatrics professor James Trosko and colleagues from South Korea's Seoul National University, provides biological evidence for previously reported epidemiological surveys that long-term use of the drug metformin for Type-2 diabetes reduces the risk of diabetes-associated cancers, such as breast cancers.

The research appears in the current edition of PLoS One.

"People with Type-2 diabetes are known to be at high risk for several diabetes-associated cancers, such as breast, liver and pancreatic cancers," said Trosko, a professor in the College of Human Medicine's Department of Pediatrics and Human Development. "While metformin has been shown in population studies to reduce the risk of these cancers, there was no evidence of how it worked."

For the study, Trosko and colleagues focused on the concept that cancers originate from adult human stem cells and that there are many natural and man-made chemicals that enhance the growth of breast cancer cells.

Using culture dishes, they grew miniature human breast tumors, or mammospheres, that activated a certain stem cell gene (Oct4A). Then the mammospheres were exposed to natural estrogen ? a known growth factor and potential breast tumor promoter ? and man-made chemicals that are known to promote tumors or disrupt the endocrine system.

The team found that estrogen and the chemicals caused the mammospheres to increase in numbers and size. However, with metformin added, the numbers and size of the mammospheres were dramatically reduced. While each of the chemicals enhanced growth by different means, metformin seemed to be able to inhibit their stimulated growth in all cases.

"While future studies are needed to understand the exact mechanism by which metformin works to reduce the growth of breast cancers, this study reveals the need to determine if the drug might be used as a preventive drug and for individuals who have no indication of any existing cancers," he said.

"Though we still do not know the exact molecular mechanism by which it works, metformin seems to dramatically affect how estrogen and endocrine-disrupting chemicals cause the pre-existing breast cancers to grow."

In addition, further research needs to be done with human cultures to see if metformin can reduce the risk of pancreatic and liver cancers in Type-2 diabetics as well, he said.

Biden's 2012 targets: Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A year from Election Day, Democrats are crafting a campaign strategy for Vice President Joe Biden that targets the big three political battlegrounds: Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida, states where Biden might be more of an asset to President Barack Obama's re-election campaign than the president himself.

The Biden plan underscores an uncomfortable reality for the Obama team. A shaky economy and sagging enthusiasm among Democrats could shrink the electoral map for Obama in 2012, forcing his campaign to depend on carrying the 67 electoral votes up for grabs in the three swing states.

Obama won all three states in 2008. But this time he faces challenges in each, particularly in Ohio and Florida, where voters elected Republican governors in the 2010 midterm elections.

The president sometimes struggles to connect with Ohio and Pennsylvania's white working-class voters, and Jewish voters who make up a core constituency for Florida Democrats and view him with skepticism.

Biden has built deep ties to both groups during his four decades in national politics, connections that could make a difference.

As a long-serving member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Biden cemented his reputation as an unyielding supporter of Israel, winning the respect of many in the Jewish community. And Biden's upbringing in a working class, Catholic family from Scranton, Pa., gives him a valuable political intangible: He empathizes with the struggles of blue-collar Americans because his family lived those struggles.

"Talking to blue-collar voters is perhaps his greatest attribute," said Dan Schnur, a Republican political analyst. "Obama provides the speeches, and Biden provides the blue-collar subtitles."

While Biden's campaign travel won't kick into high gear until next year, he's already been making stops in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida this fall, speaking at events focused on education, public safety and small businesses and raising campaign cash. Behind the scenes, he's working the phones with prominent Jewish groups and Catholic organizations in those states, a Democratic official said.

Biden is also targeting organized labor, speaking frequently with union leaders in Ohio ahead of last week's vote on a state law that would have curbed collective bargaining rights for public workers. Voters struck down the measure, and Biden traveled to Cleveland Tuesday to celebrate the victory with union members.

The Democratic official said the vice president will also be a frequent visitor to Iowa and New Hampshire in the coming weeks, seeking to steal some of the spotlight from the Republican presidential candidates blanketing those states ahead of the January caucus and primary.

And while Obama may have declared that he won't be commenting on the Republican presidential field until there's a nominee, Biden is following no such rules. He's calling out GOP candidates by name, and in true Biden style, he appears to be relishing in doing so.

During a speech last month to the Florida Democratic Convention, Biden singled out "Romney and Rick", criticizing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for saying the government should let the foreclosure crisis hit rock bottom, and hammering Texas Gov. Rick Perry's assertion that he would send U.S. troops into Mexico.

And he took on the full GOP field during an October fundraiser in New Hampshire, saying "There is no fundamental difference among all the Republican candidates."

Democratic officials said Biden will follow in the long-standing tradition of vice presidents playing the role of attack dog, allowing Obama to stay out of the fray and appear more focused on governing than campaigning.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal strategy. The Obama campaign has been reluctant to publically define Biden's role in the re-election bid this early in the run, though campaign manager Jim Messina did say the vice president would deliver an economic message to appeal for support.

"You'll see him in communities across the country next year laying out the choice we face: restoring economic security for the middle class or returning to the same policies that led to our economic challenges," Messina said.

Democrats say Biden will campaign for House candidates in swing states as the party tries to recapture some of the seats in Congress lost during the 2010 midterms.

And here again, the vice president's efforts in politically crucial Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida could be most important. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is targeting 12 districts in those states that Obama and Biden carried in the 2008 presidential race but are represented by Republican representatives.

New York Rep. Steve Israel, who chairs the committee, said he believes Biden could be a "game-changer" in those districts.

"All he has to do is ask voters, has the Republican strategy of no worked for you?" Israel said.

Israel met with Obama and Biden at the White House earlier this month to discuss, among other things, their role in congressional campaigns. While Israel said he hopes Obama will actively campaign for Democratic House candidates, he said "the vice president has already volunteered."

2 of 3 arrested US students leave Egypt (AP)

CAIRO ? Two of three American students arrested during a protest in Cairo caught flights out of Egypt early Saturday, and the third was scheduled to leave later in the morning, according to an airport official and an attorney for one of the trio.

The three Americans were arrested on the roof of a university building near Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square last Sunday. Officials accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters.

Luke Gates, 21, left Cairo early Saturday morning on a flight to Frankfurt, Germany, an airport official said in Cairo. Gregory Porter, 19, also left the country, his attorney said.

All three were expected to have departed on separate flights by later Saturday morning, the airport official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

An Egyptian court ordered the release of Gates, Porter and 19-year-old Derrik Sweeney on Thursday. All were studying at the American University in Cairo.

Attorney Theodore Simon, who represents Porter, a student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said police escorted the three students to the Cairo airport Friday. Simon later said his client was on a flight.

"I am pleased and thankful to report that Gregory Porter is in the air. He has departed Egyptian airspace and is on his way home," Simon said, though he declined to say when Porter was expected back in the U.S.

Simon said he and Porter's mother both spoke by phone with the student, who is from the Philadelphia suburb of Glenside.

"He clearly conveyed to me ... that he was OK," Simon told the AP.

Gates is a student at Indiana University. It wasn't clear when he was expected back in the U.S.

Joy Sweeney told the AP her son, a 19-year-old Georgetown University student from Jefferson City, Missouri, would fly from Frankfurt to Washington, then on to St. Louis. She said family will meet him when he arrives late Saturday.

"I am ecstatic," Sweeney said Friday. "I can't wait for him to get home tomorrow night. I can't believe he's actually going to get on a plane. It is so wonderful."

Sweeney said she had talked with her son Friday afternoon and "he seemed jubilant."

"He thought he was going to be able to go back to his dorm room and get his stuff," she said. "We said, `No, no, don't get your stuff, we just want you here.'"

She said American University will ship his belongings home.

Sweeney had earlier said she did not prepare a Thanksgiving celebration this week because the idea seemed "absolutely irrelevant" while her son still was being held.

"I'm getting ready to head out and buy turkey and stuffing and all the good fixings so that we can make a good Thanksgiving dinner," she said Friday.
