Google files patent for smartwatch with Glass-like touchpads and functionality

Image

Starting to get bored with Google Glass already? Well, it seems like Mountain View's trying to patent some of that functionality for a smartwatch, in a substantially different way than it did before. According to an application submitted to the USPTO, such a device would include standard smartwatch functions like a wireless transceiver, display and processor, but could also be equipped with two touchpads located on each side of the bezel. Those could enable "pinch, stretch and scroll on a platform with limited space available for user input," and would also communicate "with the clock line or data line." That means they'd control all the smartwatch functions, of course, but Google may be leaving the door open for it to control other devices as well, judging by the cagey wording -- perhaps sidestepping the need to reach for or yell at your eyewear.

BAA: Support after attacks at race overwhelming

BOSTON (AP) ? Boston Marathon organizers say they've been overwhelmed by public support after bombs killed three people and injured hundreds more at the finish line of their race.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the April 15 attacks, Boston Athletic Association executive director Tom Grilk said Wednesday the tragedy has spawned a massive outpouring of assistance. Grilk and Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray say the tight-knit running community has come together even more since the bombing at the world's most prestigious marathon.

Grilk says the B.A.A. has not yet decided how to accommodate all the people who say they want to run or volunteer next year to show their support.

Grilk also says the organization has donated $250,000 to The One Fund Boston, the charity set up to help victims of the bombing.

'Shameless' British fraudster jailed for selling fake bomb detectors

LONDON (Reuters) - A British businessman was sentenced to 10 years in jail on Thursday after a judge described him as having "blood on his hands" for selling fake bomb detectors to Iraq and other countries and endangering lives for profit.

James McCormick, 56, was convicted of fraud last week for selling equipment based on a $20 novelty machine for finding lost golf balls.

McCormick made more than $40 million from sales in Iraq alone, British police say. His customers also included the United Nations.

Judge Richard Hone said at London's Old Bailey court that McCormick had blood on his hands and used a callous confidence trick likely to have contributed to the death of innocent people.

"The device was useless, the profit outrageous and your culpability as a fraudster has to be placed in the highest category. Your profits were obscene. You have neither insight, shame or any sense of remorse," Hone said, quoted by the Press Association.

McCormick had shown a "cavalier disregard of the potentially fatal consequences" of his deception, he added.

The useless devices had promoted a false sense of security which probably contributed to the death and injury of innocent people, the judge said.

The detectors were sold for up to 40,000 pounds ($62,000)each. But they had no working components and lacked any basis in science, the court heard.

McCormick was convicted of fraud last week for manufacturing and selling the hand-held "ADE 651" devices to countries at serious risk from bomb attacks such as Iraq, claiming they could detect explosives, drugs and other substances.

Marketing material claimed items could be detected up to 0.6 miles underground, at up to 3 miles away from the air and 100 feet under water.

During his trial, McCormick said he had sold his detectors to police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and border control in Thailand.

They were also sold in Niger and Georgia and between 2008 and 2010, Iraq bought 6,000 devices.

McCormick, a former policeman and salesman from Somerset in southwestern England, maintained the detectors did work.

"I never had any negative results from customers," he said.

Protecting our Families: How the U.S. Falls Short in Protecting New ...

Freyhauf, Feminism, Religion, Durham, Old Testament, Blogger, Bible, Gender, Violence, Ursuline, John CarrollLast weekend, I had the privilege of speaking at the National Convention for American Mothers, Inc. about motherhood in the 21st Century. ?Because this is such a vital issue for mothers that live in the U.S. (since a large majority of families have two full-time wage earners), I thought it would be appropriate to share my speech here. ?With the understanding that this a forum for feminism, I believe that this topic fits this forum because it continues to show how unequal the treatment is between the sexes ? whether it is pay, position in employment, healthcare, education, or simply balancing the responsibilities of family/career. ?For those that live in the United States, there is often a sense of exceptionalism, and as I clearly demonstrate in this speech, we are certainly a far cry from being role models that when it comes to protecting mothers (whether by birth or adoption) and families.

As a side note: ?One topic that was not explored, due to lack of data, is how maternity/paternity leave impacts same sex couples who become new parents ? I have to believe that this is a topic to also examine (and I am would encourage any feedback here). ?

Recently the United States ranked 25 out of 165 countries for being the best place to live if you are a mother.? This number is up from 31 a year ago and places us between Belarus and the Czech Republic.

You may be asking yourself, Why isn?t the United States in the top five or even in the top ten? The answer to that question becomes evident once we examine how that determination is made. The categories examined are:

  • The Election of women to government office;
  • Breast feeding programs.? In the United States 75% of mothers breastfeed their babies, 35% continue to breastfeed after six weeks. The number shrinks because mothers usually return to work and find it difficult to to pump at the office;
  • Maternal death rate is another factor, which stunned me when I found out that the US has the highest maternal death rate of any industrialized nation. Approximately 1 in 2,100 women are at risk of dying during child birth;
  • Infant death rates is another category.? Infant deaths are estimated to be 8 per 1000 births ? a number that throws us behind 40 other countries;
  • The final item is maternity leave benefits for mothers working outside the home. This seems to be one of the biggest problems.?? That is why I think it is important to take a closer look at this issue with the hope of educating ourselves so we can perpetuate change.

(AP) ? Thousands of fans are expected to join some of country music's biggest stars in mourning George Jones.

The late country music superstar's funeral will be held Thursday morning at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn. Jones died last week at 81.

Former first lady Laura Bush will speak at the funeral along with friends and fellow country stars Barbara Mandrell and Kenny Chesney. Jones also will be serenaded by Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson, Tanya Tucker, Wynonna Judd, Charlie Daniels and Randy Travis, who were all scheduled perform at the public memorial with several others.

The funeral will be broadcast live on cable music television channels CMT and GAC and ? in a nod to simpler times when Jones was at his biggest ? on all local television networks.

He was in the midst of a farewell tour that was to have wrapped up with an all-star salute in November in Nashville. He postponed two performances two weeks ago and entered the hospital with a fever and irregular blood pressure. He'd been ill off and on over the previous year.

Jones' pure, matchless baritone defined the sound of country music for a half century and his death brought universal reaction from the music community and fans. Known for hits like "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes," ''White Lightning" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today," widely acknowledged as the greatest country song, Jones had No. 1s in four decades from the 1950s to the 1980s and "Possum" remained a popular figure in Music City until his death.

Once married to Tammy Wynette, he was the living embodiment of the words "country music star" at the height of his career and continues to have broad influence on the genre, especially with artists who prefer traditional country to today's pop- and rock-influenced sounds.

Jones also had his troubles as he battled substance abuse and money troubles, but always seemed to slide by with his sense of humor and knowing grin intact.

He won a Grammy and two consecutive Country Music Association song of the year awards for "He Stopped Loving Her Today," and was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992. He was among the artists honored in Washington at the Kennedy Center in 2008.

The Beaumont, Texas, native had been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1956, which makes the setting of Thursday's ceremony all the more fitting. The Opry House holds more than 4,000 people and was expected to be filled beyond capacity.

Tim McGraw.

Tim McGraw and his former label, Curb Records, are at odds again. The Nashville, Tenn.-based label filed a lawsuit against the country music singer and Big Machine Records in federal court Monday, alleging copyright infringement and breach of contract.

This marks the latest development in a continuing saga of legal drama between the two. In May 2011, Curb filed a breach-of-contract state lawsuit against McGraw claiming that the artist had recorded songs for "Emotional Traffic," which was to be his final album with the label, too early prior to its delivery in a ?transparent tactic to attempt to fulfill his contractual recording commitment to Curb prematurely in breach of the recording agreement,? the suit stated.

Days later, McGraw filed a countersuit seeking advanced payment and recording-fund reimbursement, as well as a jury trial.

In November 2011, a judge granted McGraw permission to record music for another label while Curb released "Emotional Traffic" on Jan. 24, 2012.

After signing with Big Machine Records in May 2012, McGraw?s latest effort -- "Two Lanes of Freedom" -- was released Feb. 5.

With its lawsuit, Curb is seeking a return of master recording, compensatory and punitive damages and an injunction against future recording or releases until its contract with McGraw has been fulfilled.

Social Media: Platform for Customer Engagement ...

Social media is no longer just a platform for connecting with people but has transformed into a customer engagement platform with social networking emerging as the second most popular activity over the internet.

From being a channel which allowed one to remain in constant touch with friends and family, social media has matured into a platform for customer engagement, reveals a new report called Social Media in India - 2012, by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). According to the report, the number of social media users in urban India stood at 62 million in December 2012 and about 74% of all active internet users in urban India use social media. By June 2013, the number of social media users is set to touch 66 million.

"In the year 2011-12 India has experienced a massive social network user growth with over 50% growth. According to a report given by Neilsen in 2009, social networks and blogs were the fourth most popular online activity. For the past two years IAMAI has reported social networking as the second most popular activity, which is enough to prove the growth of social networking amongst internet users. With the innovations and value provided by the social networks, the usage can be further predicted to increase," said Yogesh Bansal, founder and CEO, ApnaCircle.com.

As per the findings of the report, of the 80 million active internet users in Urban India, 72% or about 58 million users have accessed or used some form of social networking. They have accessed social media via a personal computer (PC), laptop or even a mobile device. Interestingly, social media ranks right after e-mail (80%) in terms of usage. The report further suggests that social networking often serves to be among the 'first internet uses' of Internet in India, i.e., besides the more common reasons such as email, music and gaming.

The report further reveals that the highest proportion of social media usage was observed among the demographic segments of young men and college going students with 84% and 82% penetration levels respectively.

According to the report, although the top eight metros constitute more than a third of the entire user base, the other 66% belong to smaller cities in urban India. Also, 24% of all social networking users in India belong to small towns that have less than 2 lakh population, while another 11% are from towns that have 2-5 lakh population.

"According to the report, about 66% of social networks are being used in small towns vs 34% being used in metros, it is therefore quite clear that there is growth in tier 2 more as compared to the metros and therefore more emphasis should be laid on the value addition in these tier 2 cities," added Bansal.

With mobile penetrations reaching very high levels, and an increasing number of individuals owning feature-rich phones or even smartphones that allow internet access, social networking is rapidly penetrating the India active internet user base. One of the trends that has been observed is that apart from social networking, professional networking has been engaging the users. Professional networking sites are more popular among young females and has the second highest average time spent. It is also anticipated that the rate of growth via mobile will exceed the growth in usage through personal computers for the foreseeable future.

At present there are about 39.7 million active mobile internet users in urban India. This is almost 50% of the active internet base. These mobile internet users belong to the overall general active internet user base of 80.2 million, suggests the report. It also reveals that a greater proportion, that is, 82% of active mobile internet users, use social media, as compared to the overall general active internet population that is about 72%. According to the ICube 2012 mobile internet report, of the 23.6 million mobile internet users from the top 35 cities in India, 77% indulged in social networking by way of mobile phones. In fact, as per the report, social networking is considered the main internet activity done on a mobile phone.
