What are adoption counsellors? - Adoption.com Forums

Hi all. Could anyone give us a little guidance on what an ?adoption counselor? is?

We want to adopt domestically, ideally girls ages 4-6 or possibly an older sibling group. We might foster-to-adopt. The Connecticut DCF told us that once we go through the foster/adoption training, it would be up to them to offer a specific child to us. But we want to be actively involved in choosing the child. In cases where we can see pictures and read profiles, we feel a strong connection to just some of the kids. And in Connecticut, the state apparently only posts their most needy children, but we aren?t prepared to adopt a special needs child.

We found one small private agency that seemed to offer lots of help. Their focus is on being an advocate to the potential parents, whereas most agencies focus on the placement of specific children. Specifically, they say they can get access to information on all the kids in all 50 states. If we go with them, it would cost us a few thousand dollars to do the home study, etc. But if they can greatly expand our options, that would be worth it for us. They seemed trustworthy, and, well, wonderful.

We?re puzzled because we can?t seem to find any other agencies that offer these services ? advocating for the adoptive parents. Is this what ?adoption counselors? do? Has anyone had any experience with this type of arrangement?

Thanks!
Brian and Sheila
