The brand new Ford Fusion (pictured) is set to mark a significant breakthrough for Ford vehicles ? as it will be the first non-hybrid Ford in the US to be available with auto start-stop technology.
The technology is said to improve fuel efficiency by 3.5 per cent and pay for itself in fuel savings within 18months.
In an effort to keep the technology as affordable as possible, Ford has stuck with a 12V supporting battery and focused on creating control strategies that will ensure smooth and robust restarts as well as maintaining driver comfort. Indeed there around 25 patents pending on the $295 system.
Among its key features is dynamic charge acceptance: with Ford proposing to characterise the recharge ability of the vehicle starter batteries as dynamic charge acceptance. It believes that with appropriate modification of the alternator control strategy, even lead-acid batteries can provide excellent brake energy recuperation.
Generally, most non-hybrid vehicles with auto start-stop have been available with manual transmissions ? but most US drivers use automatics. So the new Fusion will be the first Ford vehicle to offer auto start-stop with an automatic transmission with Ford adding an electrically driven pump to the transmission as well as the upgraded start motor and absorbed glass mat battery.
Also included is voltage blending ? a technology Ford hopes to patent. This works on the idea that while the engine is running, an alternator can produce 14-15 volts while the battery typically only produces 12 volts on a full charge. So when the Fusion slows down with auto start-stop, the load model can track the vehicle speed and deceleration and calculate when to reduce the voltage from the alternator to battery-only levels prior to the Fusion stopping.
