Police: Woman Posed As Tornado Relief Fundraiser

A woman was arrested Tuesday after she was caught falsely claiming to represent the American Red Cross, trying to raise money for tornado victims, police said.Amanda Barrett, 21, of Austin, was arrested on a theft charge. Police said she contacted a Scott County business claiming to be from the Red Cross, trying to get the business to donate to relief efforts."The business became suspicious and contacted the Jackson County Red Cross office, who oversees the fundraising and administrative functions for the Scott County Red Cross Service Center," the Jackson County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.Red Cross officials said Barrett didn't represent them.Police said they arranged for a donation to be made, and Barrett was taken into custody after accepting that donation.
