Sony XQD memory cards: New format could give your next Android phone 2TB of storage

Sony has just launched XQD ? the latest line of flash storage cards, which promise blazingly fast transfer speeds, but that?s not why we?re excited. We?re excited because it?s technology that has the potential to lead to the future of mobile computing.

The Sony XQD cards are launching to nestle inside the Nikon D4 and will transfer images to your computer at speeds of 125mb per second. They?re launching initially at the 16 and 32GB mark, but the technology involved has the potential to take things lot higher than that.

Apple poised for monster flash memory deal?

Sony claims that the XQD cards could be increased up to 2TB in capacity. That?s impressive by any standards, but when you consider that with enough time it could be shrunk and shoved into your handset, that?s when things get interesting.

Cost is the main issue at the moment. The 32GB Sony XQD cards are around ?150. At the rate Moore?s Law speeds tech along, though, you?ve got to imagine that the next time you buy a Sony or Sony Ericsson handset, it could have a slot waiting for you to slot in 2TB worth of storage. And that?s a lot of apps.
