(AP) ? Nearly a year after a stroke left him barely able to move the left side of his body, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is expected to climb the 45 steps to the Senate's front door this week ? a walk that's significant not just for Illinois' junior senator, but also for medical researchers and hundreds of thousands of stroke patients.

It's estimated only one-third of patients return to work after a stroke, said Dr. Elliot Roth, medical director of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago's New Patient Recovery Unit and AbilityLab, where Kirk recovered.

The 53-year-old Republican will return to the high-profile, demanding life of a Washington lawmaker after an experimental rehabilitation so intense it's often compared to boot camp, Roth said. Patients keep grueling schedules, often spending eight hours a day or more re-learning how to walk, talk and do other tasks.

Because there are risks to going back to work unprepared, patients do "practice runs" of what it will be like to be back on the job. If and when they successfully return to work, Roth added, "It's like having a great symphony play and recognizing it's all the practice beforehand that went into it."

Kirk will walk back into a Congress that has grappled for weeks over how to avoid going over the "fiscal cliff," a series of across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts due to take effect Tuesday. President Barack Obama indicated Monday afternoon that a deal was in sight, but not yet finalized. But House Republicans said they will not vote on the issue Monday night, and it remained unclear whether the Senate would vote Monday.

The Illinois senator's return will be inspiring to fellow stroke patients, said Frank Watson, the former Republican leader of the Illinois Senate who resigned from office after his 2008 stroke.

"For us in the stroke fraternity, we're very happy to see this occur, to see somebody taking their life back," Watson said. "There are so many people who don't make it back."

Kirk, who won President Barack Obama's former Senate seat in 2010, checked himself into a hospital in January 2012 after feeling dizzy. Tests revealed that the avid swimmer had suffered a major stroke. Surgeons had to remove two small pieces of destroyed brain tissue, and temporarily removed a 4-inch by 8-inch portion of his skull to allow for swelling.

Doctors said movement in Kirk's left side was severely limited. He was in intensive care and would need speech therapy, but they expected he would make a full mental recovery.

Within days, they said Kirk was asking for his Blackberry. In May, Kirk released a video updating his progress and showing footage of him walking with the help of a harness, a cane and Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago staff. It also included clips of Kirk speaking while sitting in a chair, his left shoulder lower than his right and the left side of his face still largely paralyzed.

Kirk said in the video that his staff had counted the steps from the parking lot to the front door of the Senate. It was his hope to climb all 45 of them someday, "to fight for the people of Illinois."

In a separate video released three months later, Kirk was shown climbing stairs at the RIC and working in his home office. He said he had moved back to his home in the north Chicago suburbs, and that he was talking to his staff several times a day and keeping up with business in Washington via email. He also touted the experimental therapy, through which he had logged almost 15 miles and 145 flights of stairs.

Roth said the study represents a new approach to stroke rehabilitation, which has traditionally been slower and more cautious. In the study, one group ? which included Kirk ? was pushed harder and walked more, in an effort to see if it led to a quicker recovery.

In November, Kirk climbed 37 floors of stairs inside Chicago's Willis Tower as part of an RIC fundraiser. One of his therapists called it "remarkable progress."

Kirk has said little to the media throughout his rehabilitation. Through his staff, he declined to comment about his return to Washington. They have said he'll walk the steps Jan. 3, when the new Congress convenes.

Watson, who was in a wheelchair for months after his stroke, said it will be important for Kirk to take it slow and make time for continued rehabilitation, noting "it's not over."

Watson's stroke affected his emotions, prompting him to break down in tears at times he previously would not have. It's something that still happens a little, he said.

Moments later, talking about the significance of Kirk's return, Watson began to cry.

"We need success stories," he said, "and Mark's one of them."

Gold & Silver as Investments , Ashland Oregon LocalsGuide

In this issue we asked Mark Hutto of J. Austin & Company to answer some commonly asked questions about investing in precious metals.

What are the options available to someone who wants to invest in Gold or Silver?

There are two main ways to invest. One is through ETFs (exchange-traded fund). This is done via the commodities exchange through an online account or broker. The buyer never sees the metal he or she is investing in, it is simply bought in a similar fashion to how one would buy stocks. If you trust the idea of investing electronically, invest in ETFs; However, most people who invest in metals do not like the idea of having only a piece of paper to show their investment.? They want physical metal, because it?s common knowledge among precious metals investors that there is not enough physical metal to back up all of the electronic purchases. To purchase physical gold or silver for investment one must buy coins, rounds or bars.? For gold the old main stay used to be the Krugerrand coin minted in South Africa.? Today the US government mints the American Eagle coin; Canada, China and Europe all have monetized coins that are government minted, reliable and trustworthy for investment. Gold and silver bars are not monetized, they are simply units of precious metal. Most gold bars are made in Switzerland and are marked .999 along with a serial number, some bars are made in places such as Australia or Turkey.

How can one tell by the markings if a coin or bar is real?

As I previously mentioned, gold coins or bars are marked for purity and are made by a government authority or private mint that guarantees their metal content. ?Silver bars and rounds are also commonly marked ?.999 fine?. All units should display the metal type and the weight of the metal on the unit itself.

Are there counterfeit bullion bars and coins on the market?

Yes, there are some counterfeits, just like in paper money. Counterfeits are very rare in Ashland or Medford, but we have spotted one fake bar in our shop in the last 12 months. There are several ways to spot them. We use the specific gravity test on the gold coins that come into the shop. A counterfeit coin can be easily detected if the specific gravity is not spot-on. In the case of the one fake we detected, it was filled with tungsten, so the specific gravity was very similar to pure gold, but not close enough to go undetected.

?

Is it possible for customers to exchange something like old gold jewelry, coins or diamonds for investment grade gold or silver?

We are generally in business to trade anything on our buy list for gold, silver or cash. We get several requests like this a week. Simply ask to be paid in the equivalent of gold or silver bullion when you bring your items in. ?

So again, how do I know that what I am buying is real?

At J. Austin & Company we have methods to insure authenticity. For example in our shop we have what is known as a specific gravity scale. ?By knowing the density of an item we can guarantee what it is. Also in the case of larger bars we use ultrasonic technology to insure purity.? We are the only shop in the area using this advanced technology to insure customers are getting what they pay for.

Clinton receiving blood thinners to dissolve clot

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Doctors treating Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for a blood clot in her head said blood thinners are being used to dissolve the clot and they are confident she will make a full recovery.

Clinton didn't suffer a stroke or neurological damage from the clot that formed after she suffered a concussion during a fainting spell at her home in early December, doctors said in a statement Monday.

Clinton, 65, was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday when the clot turned up on a follow-up exam on the concussion, Clinton spokesman Phillipe Reines said.

The clot is located in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. She will be released once the medication dose for the blood thinners has been established, the doctors said.

In their statement, Dr. Lisa Bardack of the Mount Kisco Medical Group and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi of George Washington University said Clinton was making excellent progress and was in good spirits.

Clinton's complication "certainly isn't the most common thing to happen after a concussion" and is one of the few types of blood clots in the skull or head that are treated with blood thinners, said Dr. Larry Goldstein, a neurologist who is director of Duke University's stroke center. He is not involved in Clinton's care.

The area where Clinton's clot developed is "a drainage channel, the equivalent of a big vein inside the skull. It's how the blood gets back to the heart," Goldstein said.

Blood thinners usually are enough to treat the clot and it should have no long-term consequences if her doctors are saying she has suffered no neurological damage from it, Goldstein said.

Clinton returned to the U.S. from a trip to Europe, then fell ill with a stomach virus in early December that left her severely dehydrated and forced her to cancel a trip to North Africa and the Middle East. Until then, she had canceled only two scheduled overseas trips, one to Europe after breaking her elbow in June 2009 and one to Asia after the February 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Her condition worsened when she fainted, fell and suffered a concussion while at home alone in mid-December as she recovered from the virus. It was announced Dec. 13.

This isn't the first time Clinton has suffered a blood clot. In 1998, midway through her husband's second term as president, Clinton was in New York fundraising for the midterm elections when a swollen right foot led her doctor to diagnose a clot in her knee requiring immediate treatment.

Clinton had planned to step down as secretary of state at the beginning of President Barack Obama's second term. Whether she will return to work before she resigns remained a question.

Democrats are privately if not publicly speculating: How might her illness affect a decision about running for president in 2016?

After decades in politics, Clinton says she plans to spend the next year resting. She has long insisted she had no intention of mounting a second campaign for the White House four years from now. But the door is not entirely closed, and she would almost certainly emerge as the Democrat to beat if she decided to give in to calls by Democratic fans and run again.

Her age ? and thereby health ? would probably be a factor under consideration, given that Clinton would be 69 when sworn in, if she were elected in 2016. That might become even more of an issue in the early jockeying for 2016 if what started as a bad stomach bug becomes a prolonged, public bout with more serious infirmity.

Not that Democrats are willing to talk openly about the political implications of a long illness, choosing to keep any discussions about her condition behind closed doors. Publicly, Democrats reject the notion that a blood clot could hinder her political prospects.

"Some of those concerns could be borderline sexist," said Basil Smikle, a Democratic strategist who worked for Clinton when she was a senator. "Dick Cheney had significant heart problems when he was vice president, and people joked about it. He took the time he needed to get better, and it wasn't a problem."

It isn't uncommon for presidential candidates' health ? and age ? to be an issue. Both in 2000 and 2008, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., had to rebut concerns he was too old to be commander in chief or that his skin cancer could resurface.

Two decades after Clinton became the first lady, signs of her popularity ? and her political strength ? are ubiquitous.

Obama had barely declared victory in November when Democrats started zealously plugging Clinton as their strongest White House contender four years from now, should she choose to take that leap.

"Wouldn't that be exciting?" House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi declared in December. "I hope she goes. Why wouldn't she?"

Even Republicans concede that were she to run, Clinton would be a force to be reckoned with.

"Trying to win that will be truly the Super Bowl," Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker and 2012 GOP presidential candidate, said in December. "The Republican Party today is incapable of competing at that level."

Americans admire Clinton more than any other woman in the world, according to a Gallup poll released Monday ? the 17th time in 20 years that Clinton has claimed that title. And a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 57 percent of Americans would support Clinton as a candidate for president in 2016, with just 37 percent opposed. Websites have already cropped up hawking "Clinton 2016" mugs and tote bags.

Beyond talk of future politics, Clinton's three-week absence from the State Department has raised eyebrows among some conservative commentators who questioned the seriousness of her ailment after she canceled planned Dec. 20 testimony before Congress on the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton had been due to discuss with lawmakers a scathing report she had commissioned on the attack. It found serious failures of leadership and management in two State Department bureaus were to blame for insufficient security at the facility. Clinton took responsibility for the incident before the report was released, but she was not blamed. Four officials cited in the report have either resigned or been reassigned.

Cult Classics and Creative Gifts : Mom Knows It All. ? PR Friendly ...

Still need a last minute gift? Is the person a movie lover? If so, you might find these suggestions from Genna helpful.

Movie Film And Popcorn

There are just some movies that everybody agrees on. While the vast majority of the films produced over the last century are up for debate, there are a select few that everybody loves. We?re talking, of course, about those cult classics?the comedies that make you laugh no matter how many times you watch them and that serve as bonding material between you and the new friends you make.

For example, every Christmas, TNT airs A Christmas Story as a marathon. They just repeat it over and over and over all day long. It?s an event that people look forward to all year long. They wake up on Christmas morning, put on their?Christmas Story shirts?and let the marathon serve as background music for the whole holiday. Don?t be embarrassed if this sounds like you?there are lots of people who do this!

One of the great things about these cult favorites is that they make it easier to find gifts for the people who really love them. A Mel Brooks boxed set is a great gift for the person who loved Blazing Saddles. There are all sorts of t-shirts and related paraphernalia for the lovers of the Monty Python movies. Do you have a friend who watches Fight Club at least twice a year? A signed edition of Chuck Palahniuk?s latest novel makes a great gift. ?They even make ?the Dude? cardigans that are built to look like the bathrobe worn in The Big Lebowski.

The simple fact is that a love of the cult classics is something that bonds people together. When you?re in IKEA, standing in front of a stack of floor rugs and say ?It really tied the room together? and someone a few feet away chuckles, you share a glance. You might even exchange an acknowledgement of ?Dude? as a greeting with your fellow Big Lebowski fan shopper.? The same thing happens if you?re out somewhere and ?Puttin? on the Ritz? comes over the musak?everybody chuckles and shares in a moment of fandom for Young Frankenstein or, better, takes it a step further and tosses an ?I can?t breathe in this thing!? out there in reference to another Brooks classic: Spaceballs.

What?s your favorite cult classic? Are you a fan of Army of Darkness? Or are you more of an Evil Dead purist? Have you ever claimed to be Kaiser Solze? Okay, the Usual Suspects isn?t exactly a comedy but it?s still relevant!
