Study sees growing demand for suborbital trips

Commercial suborbital spaceflights should bring in between $600 million and $1.6 billion in revenue in their first decade of operations, according to a study commissioned by the U.S. and Florida governments and released on Wednesday.

Tourism drives about 80 percent of the demand for suborbital flights, which reach about 63 miles above the planet's surface before plunging back through the atmosphere.

The thrill ride gives fliers a few minutes to float in microgravity and a view of the Earth set against the blackness of space.

Virgin Galactic, an offshoot of Richard Branson's London-based Virgin Group, is one of six firms developing reusable suborbital spaceships, an analysis by The Tauri Group of Alexandria, Virginia, found.

Prices currently range from $200,000 for a ride on Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo, a six-passenger, two-pilot vehicle currently undergoing testing, to $95,000 for a flight on privately held XCOR Aerospace's planned two-seater Lynx vehicle.

Virgin Galactic, which is aiming to begin commercial service around 2014, already has $70 million in deposits from 536 people, Chief Executive George Whitesides said at a related congressional hearing on Wednesday.

The Tauri Group believes there are about another 7,500 wealthy people waiting in the wings.

"Our analysis indicates that about 8,000 high-net-worth individuals from across the globe are sufficiently interested and have spending patterns likely to result in the purchase of a suborbital flight ? one-third from the United States," the report said.

"We estimate that about 40 percent of the interested, high-net-worth population, or 3,600 individuals, will fly within the 10-year forecast," it added.

The study, which included surveys of 200 people with a net worth of least $5 million, valued the fledgling industry at $600 million in its first decade, based on current market conditions and interest.

The market could be worth nearly three times that if marketing and consumer interest grows in the wake of successful flights, the study said.

"Further potential could be realized through price reductions and unpredictable achievements such as major research discoveries, the identification of new commercial applications, the emergence of global brand value, and new government (especially military) uses for suborbital reusable vehicles," the study said.

After tourists, the next biggest group of potential users are in the research community. Other potential markets include technology flight demonstrations, media and public relations, education, satellite launching, remote sensing and suborbital travel from one destination to another, a technology that is likely beyond the study's 10-year time frame.

The $277,000 study, titled "Suborbital Reusable Vehicles: A Ten-Year Forecast of Market Demand," was paid for by the Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees commercial spaceflight; and the state of Florida, which is home to NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

French camps offer frogs legs, taste of British weather

SAINT-LAURENT BLANGY, France (Reuters) - With four gold medals in pocket from the 2012 Olympics, France is also reaping euros from training camps a Eurostar-ride from London that are treating world athletes to frogs' legs and gleaming new sports facilities along with British-style rain.

Hundreds of teams have piled into the humdrum port of Calais and surrounding area, a two-hour dash by train under the English Channel, to take advantage of high-tech training facilities that are available for free and away from the hustle of London.

The grey skies and summer drizzle of northern France mean athletes from as far away as Colombia and South Africa get to acclimatize to the British weather while also sampling some genuine French cuisine.

"The food is delicious. I've even tried frogs' legs, and a number of other things I can't remember the names of," Uzbek sprint canoeist Vadim Menkov told Reuters, training in the sleepy town of Saint-Laurent Blangy.

Buttery croissants were unfortunately off his training menu, he added.

In July alone, in the countdown to the Games, some fifty teams trained in the Pas-de-Calais region, including Japanese gymnasts, Colombian BMX bikers and even British gymnasts trying to escape the media eye.

While in Britain athletes have had to pay for training facilities, sometimes helped by grants from the London Olympic organizers, Pas-de-Calais has offered its camps for free, betting the region would benefit by putting up and feeding the sporting delegations.

For a region blighted by high unemployment, getting in on the Games has brought valuable publicity along with the revenue from hotel stays and restaurant bills.

The tiny town of Saint Omer says it has generated an extra 1 million euros in revenues in the first six months of the year, largely because of the Olympic initiative.

Local officials' hopes of luring Olympic ticket-holders to stay in the Calais area, along what they dub "the Opal coast", and whip to London for events have been disappointed however, with hotels reporting few Olympic tourists.

WEATHER FORECAST: RAIN

When the councilor in charge of the Calais area, Dominique Dupilet, came up his idea of cashing in on the 2012 Games after Paris lost its bid to host them, the British media sneered at the cheeky French for muscling in on their sporting terrain.

Seven years and 115 million euros ($141.63 million) of investment later, the area is reaping the rewards.

Nine sports facilities have been extended and renovated since 2005, and three built from scratch, including an 8.4 million euro gymnastics base in the town of Arques, which athletes say is Europe's biggest and one of the best in the world.

Roger Mortier, director of the Hotel du Golf near Arques, says the influx of sporting delegations has brought him 100,000 euros of extra revenue since the start of the year, while looking after the athletes has lifted staff morale.

"The staff have been really proud of getting to see the French basketball team and other sportsmen. Even the British gymnasts have trained here, which was an ironic touch," he said.

In the nearby town of Lumbres more than half the Olympic BMXers have trained at the brand-new track set in the rolling fields and hills of northern France, taking advantage of the peace to focus ahead of the race of a lifetime.

Relentless drizzle halted at least one training session for the Colombian, Australian and Italian BMX riders for fear of injury on the steep starting ramp -- a reminder their Olympic experience will be subject to Britain's changeable weather.

A more acclimatized Belgian struggled on, his trainer stoically mopping rainwater from the potentially perilous ramp.

"At least we can train and feel like we're in London here," said Italian BMXer Manuel de Vechi.

Weather aside, hoteliers say they have failed to convince ticket holders that Calais is a suburb of the London Olympics.

Mortier at the Hotel du Golf in Lumbres says he's given up on luring ticket holders. "Let's face it, we're not in England and you've still got to get across the Channel," he said, but added that the Olympics had brought some unexpected bookings.

"We've got people here trying to get away from it all in London and looking for somewhere to have a holiday," he laughed. ($1 = 0.8120 euros)

OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman on why their Android Power video game ...

?
By ALAN DANZIS

Unless you?ve been living under a rock these last few weeks, you?ve heard of OUYA. (You just may not be able to pronounce it.)

To-date, the $99 Android video game console where you?re actually encourage to hack the box, has raised $5.8 million on Kickstarter, far exceeding their original goal of $950,000 and with eight days to go. (In fact, they had raised their target amount in under 12 hours.)

Along with the insane press coverage praising the success and OUYA itself, there started to become a backlash from media and fans. Could they actually produce a box? Raising money was one thing ? especially in days like this with so many successful Kickstarter game projects ? but putting in place a manufacturing system for a video game console and lining up developers? that is something else.

I recently spoke with CEO Julie Uhrman over email about OUYA, their plans, what the critics are saying and more.

What were your expectations when you decided to start the Kickstarter? And then, how did you react when you saw that they were wildly exceeded?I?m sure?just in the first day?

We needed Kickstarter to fund our effort, and specifically to take OUYA from a functional prototype to final product for the market.

We have been, of course, totally blown away by the level of support OUYA has received. With 8 days left on our Kickstarter campaign, we?ve have raised almost 6 million dollars, and have more than 45,000 backers cheering us on. What is amazing about that number, to me, is that those are the people who actually opened their wallet and donated. I have to assume that there are tens of thousands more cheering us on from the sidelines who may not have backed us but certainly want to see us succeed. It?s pretty exciting to think about that, and it keeps us motivated. We want to make those backers proud: we are laser focused on delivering an amazing game experience in March 2013.

A lot of the early coverage and buzz coming out of your initial days was very, very positive. Then, it started to get a little negative as people said you wouldn?t be able to deliver, you didn?t ask for enough money, etc. Walk me through what it was like from the team to go from overwhelmingly positive coverage to negative in seemingly days and even hours?

We were prepared for it. It?s not surprising that people would want to kick the tires a bit. Until we have a product on the market that people can put their hands on, we?ll have to get comfortable with skepticism.

What was a bit frustrating was that so many folks wanted to review us, and compare us to existing options already on store shelves, as if we?re a final product on the market. And that?s just not realistic, given where we are. We have made it very clear that we are an early stage project and that we turned to Kickstarter to take us from functional prototype to OUYAs in the living room. Just like those skeptics?we?d like to fast forward. But ultimately, we can?t. We just need to stay focused on delivering the best possible game experience on OUYA.

Thankfully, the skeptics seem to have quieted down. I think that?s partly because we were able to lay bare the process both of vetting OUYA?s path to market prior to going on Kickstarter, and what our next steps will be. We?re not building a rocket here: the tech is very standard. The innovation lies in the business model and the relationship we will have with developers?and of course, the beautiful package provided by Yves Behar both with the controller and the console.

For now, we say, ?Bring on the tough questions!? They keep us on our toes, sharpen our skills and will help us deliver an even better product when we go to market next year.

Let?s get this out of the way: When do you think you will have a launch date ready to be announced?

We?ve stated publicly that the first units will ship to backers in March 2013.

How far along is the prototype?

We?ve got a functional prototype that plays games. The software is concurrently in development. We?re in the final stages of conversations with leading ODMs and will select a production partner soon.

How many people are play testing the controller for usability? Is what we?ve seen so far the final design?

This is confidential. What we can say is this: many of the developers we?ve spoken to are eager to play a role in the design and development. For example, when we first reached out to Adam Saltsman of Canabalt he wanted to play a role in the controller design. People like Adam have the unique perspective of both a gamer and a developer which can inform design and development of our controller.

Could the costs for the current prototype change as it gets closer to market? What if it winds up costing more than you anticipated?

It won?t. We?ve crunched the numbers and designed our prototype and we?re right where we need to be. We added Ethernet as a feature to our hardware design, but we probably won?t add much more. We will not exceed the $99 cost of the console. The whole point of OUYA is to be accessible to gamers and developers ? we have no intention of raising the cost of the console past what we?ve already quoted to our backers, and there is no reason to think that we would have to.

How are conversations with developers going so far?

We?ve been bombarded with requests to meet with developers. Our goal is to get back to each and everyone. We?re talking to a range of people from beloved indie game makers, to top publishers of big franchises.

And, we?ve already announced a partnership with OnLive to bring hundreds of games on demand to OUYA and our first exclusive title, built from the ground up from OUYA: Robert Bowling?s episodic prequel to his upcoming Human Element.

Describe your relationship with Google. What do they think?

We love Google. But we?re not having any partnership conversations if that?s what you are asking.

There have been a ton of successful Kickstarters recently centered around gaming. What do you say to fans that are worried they?re spending all this money, not just with you guys, but on Kickstarter in general, and haven?t gotten firm releases dates yet. Plus? products seem so far off from reality. Are fans going to get burned out soon on supporting Kickstarters?

This is a question for Kickstarter. We don?t feel comfortable speaking for them.

Who do you see as your true competitors? Do you see Xbox and XBLA in particular as a competitor? Or do your competitors not exist yet?

I think that there are a number of companies that might be viewed as competitors. That said, we?re focused on what we are doing: our goal is to open up console gaming, making it more accessible both to gamers and developers.

One of the things you were praised for early was that you?re practically telling people to hack the device. How do you balance that need with appealing to Android fanboys who love to hack, with the needs of a publisher who worries that that creates an open-door to piracy?

OUYA will be just as secure as any other Android-powered device. In fact, because all the paid content will require authentication with OUYA?s servers, we have an added layer of security. Hacking and openness are about getting what you want to do with the hardware. Rooting the device won?t give you any more access to the software.

Finally ? You?ve asked fans what games they want on the platform?what do you personally want to play?

Is it fair to say we want it all?!

I guess what I am most excited by is the prospect that developers will want to create new types of gameplay inspired by our unique controller. I?m not sure what that will look like, but I respect the creative talents of game makers?they know that stuff better than I do?and I can?t wait for them to surprise and delight me. It?s really exciting to think about the potential of games designed specifically for OUYA.

Sales Leadership: Impacting Your 2013 Revenue | Business 2 ...

Yes, I am fully aware it is still 2012 and there are five months left in this year to exceed your quota and hopefully you are well positioned from a pipeline, marketing and headcount to achieve your goals. This week I want you to turn your thinking towards growing overall company revenues for next year and making sure you have the proper number of salespeople contributing on your sales team.

If you follow US college football or basketball, there is constant source of news describing the various camps, college campus site visits, athlete commitments and coaches ?fanning? out across the country to recruit both next years and the following years athletes to play for their school. Sales managers must also focus on this aspect of the job, those with the best players seem to win championships, do you have the best talent on your team?

First, recognize that if you hire someone between now and the end of this year, they may contribute somewhat to your 2012 objectives, but if your new-hire to contribution/pipeline cycle is anywhere between 3-5 months, it won?t be substantial. However, by adding new salespeople in the next 90 days, they will be ready to be contributors in 2013.

Second, if you don?t know next year?s revenue objectives yet, begin thinking through this subject and discuss it with your management team. Many organizations are starting early stage strategic planning at this stage. If you need assistance in creating a strategic plan let us know.

Third, assess your current sales team. Do you have strong performers, legacy staff, potential players or deadwood? Rank each existing salesperson in one of these four categories. It will help evaluate who stays, who goes and what you need from a talent perspective.

Fourth, create a chart that describes your top five work experiences that a high performer should have and the top five personal characteristics you want from members of your team. This becomes the key starting point. This will help you craft your advertisement but more importantly it will clarify in your mind exactly what you are looking for and help you evaluate resumes and candidates during the interview process.

Fifth, is your current compensation working to attract top talent? On our website, there is a free sales compensation assessment that will allow you to evaluate the effectiveness of your plan. www.AcumenManagement.com

Sixth, as I have mentioned in previous blogs and in my book; Recruiting High Performance Sales Teams, make sure you define an interview process that tests, evaluates and challenges each candidate. I am currently working with a client building a process to hire a sales manager; this interviewing process becomes more complex and more important to get it right. We are building in case studies, presentation evaluations as well as on line assessment tools.

Seventh, and not necessary last, make sure your on-boarding process is designed to ensure the salesperson can effectively sell your company, present your products/services and fully understands the operations side of your business and sales organization.

Lots to do, but preparing now for next year will ensure you get a head start on 2013 and this time next year you will be enjoying the summer!
